You can play the run and stack the box without blitzing.
I really don't understand why the OL is having trouble in this area. Kirk and Brian Ferentz are OL gurus. What gives?
IMO you need the physicality and size (maulers) like Scherrf and Yanda, for example, to be good run blockers. See Wisconsin. Of course BV will disagree but to me this year it just didn't look like our line was that physical and strong against the majority of dlines, especially our interior. Today was the worst. Of course our philosophy (zone scheme) and stubborness and lack of creativity from our coaches has something to do with it.The way I see it they are very good at teaching technique and a certain style of run game but when it comes to making adjustments they are either unwilling or unable to do that so. They are easy to scheme against from a defensive standpoint and their attitude of we are going to run because that is what we do hamstrings them. Pair that with this year when our strength of the o-line was pass blocking you have a down year.
A huge part of their run game is based on the zone blocking scheme and when defenses can overload certain gaps and play 8 in the box it is hard to run against. When was the last time you saw Iowa run a power Iso run, trap, or a lead toss sweep besides maybe once a game? There are other ways they can block and mix up the run game but they do not do that.
Every DL sells out to stop the run. What does that even mean? It's their #1 responsibility.
Is it coaching or lack of talent on o line? The OL's struggles to run block all season was very weird. Hopefully we can get a new OL coach because there's no reason a team with our OL history should be having trouble run blocking. The interior of the offensive line was not a strength so hopefully some new blood can step up and take over.
Young did miss one pretty big cutback lane (might have been a TD), but agreed.Yep. The RBs need to see the lane and make the cut. That was not their problem today. There was no way to see the cutback lane when you are getting tackled behind your LOS. The OL just got whipped today. No point in trying to sugar coat it. Their pass blocking did get better as the game went on.
He said "sell out to stop the run". You're saying "stack the box". In my opinion, selling out to stop the run means 9 guys in the box. Also, in my opinion, stacking the box is 8 guys in the box, to stop the run. Maybe we define our terms before we continue. You can play the run and stack the box without blitzing.
Yes. He was keying on the run game. It's also the reason that Easley was wide open for a 75 yard touchdown. DB was caught leaning into the backfield on the play fake.
Today Iowa faced probably the best Defense this Line and RB corps will ever see EVER.. That’s a FACT!!! That Mississippi State D was Nasty Good...Very concerning. Line did not run block well all year. Weak stable of backs returning.
This area HAS to improve going forward. Who we got coming in???
They were not selling out to stop the run. Our running game has sucked all year long. Our offensive line is not good at run blocking, and we have below average running backs. Nobody has to sell out to stop our running game. That MSU line handed our line their asses on a golden platter all day long. Outside of a long pass play, which yes i know it counts, we had 124 yards of offense. That is pathetic no matter who you are playing.Shouldn’t be, but when you play that defensive line and they are selling out to stop the run? Wish we could have gotten something, but we probably won’t see a D line that good again for a number of years.
It’s funny to me that some here get this and others don’t.Today Iowa faced probably the best Defense this Line and RB corps will ever see EVER.. That’s a FACT!!! That Mississippi State D was Nasty Good...

Well we brought in an OC and made him an O line coach, and promoted an Oline coach who was very average at that job, to the OC position, which he has no business having.I really don't understand why the OL is having trouble in this area. Kirk and Brian Ferentz are OL gurus. What gives?
So, tell me how good our running game was this year. Tell me we have above average backs. We don't. Tell me that -15 yards rushing isn't pathetic. It is. Tell me 199 yards of offense isn't pathetic. It is. Tell me how good our offensive line is at run blocking. They aren't. Tell me our line didn't get their asses handed to them all game long. They did. LOL
Nobody is saying we didn't. Their is no excuse to be that inept on offense no matter who we played. Also, our running game and offense have struggled the entire season in case you haven't been paying attention. Today, was a whole other level of ineptitude, but it wasn't just today. It’s funny to me that some here get this and others don’t.
Both. There is a general lack of talent on the entire offense outside of Fant and Hockenson. The line looks slow and weak. Not just today either. Today you see the difference in recruiting 4 star players and 2 star players. Yes, we won, but there was a clear difference in talent, and athleticism on the field. We made up for it by playing disciplined and eliminating penalties. Is it coaching or lack of talent on o line?
