Weak running game today and for 2019

Very concerning. Line did not run block well all year. Weak stable of backs returning.
This area HAS to improve going forward. Who we got coming in???

It's not the RBs. Although they aren't really helping matters. I'd blame the OL by a 75/25 margin vs the RBs.

Wut???? -15 yards should not ever, ever, ever be acceptable, based on who we are playing. Ever. Never, ever, ever.
Shouldn’t be, but when you play that defensive line and they are selling out to stop the run? Wish we could have gotten something, but we probably won’t see a D line that good again for a number of years.

Negative should not be acceptable, no, but they faced an insanely good DL today. Not to mention a lot of that negative yardage came from sacks.

Replacing Reynolds and Render will be key, but we've got some good interior guys in the pipeline (my current guess for the starting 3 would be Kallenberger, Banwart, and one of the Paulsens), and it'll be year 3 of Polasek and BF as OC.

Also, I'd argue some of it is on the RBs. A zone scheme relies on seeing and hitting cutback lanes to make the defense pay for overpursuing or poor discipline, and while the OL wasn't perfect, there was plenty of missed lanes by the RBs this year. Hopefully with each of them being Jrs, and guys like Goodson possibly being a shot in the arm, they start to take advantage of those.

Yep. The RBs need to see the lane and make the cut. That was not their problem today. There was no way to see the cutback lane when you are getting tackled behind your LOS. The OL just got whipped today. No point in trying to sugar coat it. Their pass blocking did get better as the game went on.

I'm choosing to celebrate in the moment myself. All other stuff is for another day........credit to the Hawks for the win no matter how it was done. Positive vibes into the off season is a good thing for next year's team.

with IKM in and more reps, I expect the running game to return to about average or better... efficient is good enough for me

There was certainly some confusion on the OL. It looked like MSU had someone coming through unblocked on every play.

Lol, any team with a pulse can play defense against the same 3 run plays. Our play book is 8 plays deep. No one to blame but our coach. PERIOD.
