We were completely lied to this year....

Sure, the 4-8 record sucks and the 6 straight losses to end the season really blows. But I'm probably more upset at the coaches just flat out lying to us this year. For example:

1. We heard GD gushing over the talent of CJ and how much of a mismatch he was going to be and how they were going to get him the ball at every opportunity they could. That was a lie. It took until the very last game of the year before he was targeted for farther than 20 yards downfield.

2. We heard GD brag about how he adjusts his offensive philosophy to the talent he has. That was a lie. I've never seen an offense try to force a square peg into a round hole as this offense did.

3. We heard from Phil about how our secondary was our strength and we'd be playing more man coverage than we had previously. That was a lie. Once we got into B1G play, it was the same ol' same ol'. By the way, the secondary, save for Hyde (and even he got burned more than usual), was atrocious.

4. We were told by Phil that, while he doesn't believe in blitzing a ton, that we'd blitz more this year since the strength of the team was not on the DL and we'd have to manufacture some pressure. That was a lie. I swear Norm blitzed more than Phil ever did this year. Gardner is still in the Michigan backfield surveying the field as we speak.

5. We were told by GD that he loves to take chances downfield following a turnover. That was a lie. I can't tell you the number of stretch play left or stretch play right we ran the play following our defense getting a turnover. In fact, I can't recall a single time in the first play following a turnover that we didn't try to go for the big play and immediate score.

6. We were told by GD that he has always thrived in a 2 minute drill situation. That was a lie. I never thought it would be possible to say this, but we were worse in our 2 minute drills this year than we've ever been. Even the "great" KOK never got a delay of game penalty in the 2 minute drill. At times, I literally laughed out loud watching us try to run a hurry up.

As far as I'm concerned, the whole damn lot of them can go.....they've managed to set Iowa football back a decade in the last 3 years. And with the schedule getting increasingly more difficult next year, I put our W/L at 2-10.

Love your fire, but it's misdirected. Point the cannon at you know who.

The only lies were the ones you told yourself.

You told yourself loosing more starters than anyone in the B10 wasn't a big deal.

You told yourself being forced to play 2 TEs in a 5 WR set was a good thing because it plays to our strengths.

You told yourself that having two new coordinators wouldn't cause any bumps.

Look back at what he wrote. The coordinators did not do what they said they would do.

If you take what football coaches say about their players as gospel you are lying to yourself.

We might have been in the bottom half, but we didn't lose the most. Wisconsin, for example, returned less than we did.

You told yourself being forced to play 2 TEs in a 5 WR set was a good thing because it plays to our strengths.
Who said that? After CJF, who did we have? Derby? A couple of guys who had yet to see the field prior to this year?

You told yourself that having two new coordinators wouldn't cause any bumps.
Who said this one? Even still, I don't know that I'd classify our offensive output this year as "a few bumps." Maybe more like a 12 mile mogul course...

Hey Duff, maybe Game Day Ron will help you bottle your ferrets koolaid and you can market it as a sedative.
Prolly won't sell real well in here, tho.

Me confused? I aint the one who can't figure out why coaches heal praises on players in pre season pressers even if they may not deserve it.

I would like to loose some more players, to. While their at it they can loose themselves. Your right about the lies. Maybe they will see the error of ther ways, brah.

Coaches are so full of coach- speak you get nothing out of them anymore. They all say the same things, they are well coached, one game at a time, execute, it's pretty lame.

I knew we were going to suck also.

But I thought the defense would be garbage and the offense ok

I was wrong they were both garbage.

C'mon, Duff. Don't try to twist this into an "unrealistic fan expectation" problem, or a "youth and talent" problem, or "new system" problem. None of that was revealed throughout the season.

Even the starters lost, it wasn't like a wholesale overhaul of all-conference players. Reiff, McNutt and maybe Gettis, Prater and Binns are the main guys whose absence might have negatively affected this season. All others were average impact guys to begin with. There was still an adequate amount of talent and experience left on this team -- especially on The Offensive. The problem was complete mismanagement of that talent to maximize their skills and attributes they brought to the table.

As for the "bumps" of 2 new coords. PP was already a system disciple and brought nothing "new" to the table, outside of (as Spider pointed out) the promise of tweaks to help compensate for the young, undersized DL with the experience and speed of the back 7. The Gerg brought a different system but while it turned out to be a toxic spill of ineptitude, it was hardly a challenge for a D-1 football player to run.

It's one thing to fail to achieve - that can be accepted (for the reasons you tried to offer). It's a completely different thing to fail to even attempt. In that regard, Spider is spot on with observing that what the coaches said they were going to do vs. what they actually did was a total lie.

It's probably the top reason for so many wanting to revolt against The Corporal and The Gerg. It's not just the 4-8 record. It's the complete failure to display any attempt to alter the course with many opportunities to do so. It's the complete adherence to schematic dogma despite repeated failure. It's the mismanagement / mismatch of scheme to personnel. It's the never-ending battle against situational incompetence. It's the repeated failure to display any sense of urgency to win -- especially in WINNABLE GAMES.

All of these flaws were supposedly recognized and intended to be addressed through a combination of enhancements, tweaks and a "scratch where it itches" approach. At least, that's what the coaches all claimed during preseason. BALDERDASH!
