We have the talent right now to have a great offense.

Yea, Im still concerned about if Jake has the arm. Jon says its a timming thing. If it is he will get it down as he is real smart. Another problem is we really dont have the RBs we need. I love Wiesman but he isnt a every down BT back. We just dont have the talant on offense to overcome mistakes. Feel sorry for the D they are playing really well. After all that we still have chance to win 7 games I think. Which at thr risk of getting run off the board would be one heck of a coaching job I think
Add to that Jake simply played awful -- missed 2 WIDE open receivers down the middle of the field that would have been scores (seemed to be plenty of separation ;) ), constantly locked onto the out pattern and was just "off" on his targets.

While Iowa may not have Oregon level talent, there is certainly adequate D-1 talent to be much more competitive than they have been "allowed" to be. It's a little bit poor execution / bad mistake at the inopportune time and a lotta bit failure to create opportunity for success due to limited scheme and poor situational play calling.

"We have the talent right now to have a great offense"

I disagree.

They have a quarterback who has played in nine college games. they have a wide receiver corps that probably one of the most challenged in the Big Ten conference, which means one of the most challenged in the BCS conferences. Mark Weisman or Damon Bullock are not starters for over half the BCS conference teams, at a minimum.

I think what Iowa has could be a lot of fun to watch next year, but that assumes consistent leadership.

Right now, it's all up for debate.
I agree with everything until the sentence in bold. While I think we will be better on offense, I'm not sure that we have that "difference maker". On defense, we lose 3 great linebackers. This concerns me a lot.

I pretty much agre with this. I dont think we have to have Green. But when you a running team you better have some good RBs
We have talent for a nice running game in my opinion, but we just don't have a running back. If anyone thinks we have a running back right now then you're delusional.

We haven't had a decent running back since Marcus Coker, and he was just that, decent. A Marcus Coker on this team and the Wisconsin and Ohio State game could have gone either way. We probably still get absolutely shut down against MSU, but we'd have beaten NIU.

A Shonn Greene on this team, and I'm confident we'd be a 1-loss team right now. The fact that we haven't been able to recruit a top back since Marcus Coker is a problem.

We don't have the talent plan and simple. Not one "playmaker" on the entire offense really. I also am still not sold on Ruddock, not that he isn't serviceable, but I just don't see him as the type of game changing athlete (arm, speed etc.) that can put the team on his shoulders. If he had great athletes around him, maybe he could do well. We just don't have any special players right now unfortunately. We have a team full of #3 WRs and #2-3 RBs. As one poster mentioned, if you think we have playmakers you aren't watching much college football... our lack of overall team speed is GLARING!!!

Now, how much of this falls on the staff? IMO, if you have a coach making $4mil that is so "well respected" in college football, shouldn't he be able to get some stinkin athletes in here? Part of the reason you pay a coach well is because of their incredible recruiting ability. In 13 years we've had hardly a WR make a go of it in the NFL and to my knowledge not one QB who has taken a snap in a regular season NFL game. How do you have a dynamite offense when you can't produce players at these skill positions? Most disappointing to me is the conference is down right now. With a long tenured coach and new facilities we should be in the top 2-3 of the conference right now and instead we are plugging along at average. Michigan, Nebby and PSU won't be down forever so we are missing our window of opportunity right now which sucks.

I haven't been able to rewatch any games this year as I have in years past, but one thing I've noticed happening far too often this year is our route combos put our receivers far too close to each other. I'm not sure if it's a function of our WR's not reacting well to the redirect, if we're not running them correctly, or if they aren't designed well, but I would tend to think it's less of the latter and more the first two.

My mind might not be working right, but I think it was on the play where KMM dropped that ball in the red zone that could have been a first down/TD(?). KMM started on the left, I believe, with CJF to his side. Iowa ran a "drive" concept where the outside WR comes underneath on a drag and CJF runs an intermediate in route...I THINK KMM got jostled a bit and KMM/CJF ended up basically stacked on top of each other (from a throwing window perspective) less than 10 yards apart.

Since KMM was initially covered and Rudock didn't want to loft the ball to CJF in the red zone (for some reason I recall a 3rd WR painfully close to CJF on that play too), he had to leave the pocket to his right. KMM got some separation but then dropped the pass...this is just one example. It just seems like that has happened several times this year where we get to see a coaches cam look or a look where they specifically show the coverage...

Why does everyone who has a differing opinion have to be labeled "delusional" on this forum?

Anyways, Weisman is a FB. He's doing a helluva job, but he's a FB.
Our WR's are............serviceable at best. It's not for lack of effort, they just aren't that talented.
Rudock is a pretty nice QB. No he doesn't have a rocket arm. But he's playing at a high level for a guy who's only played 9 games.

Is that the "talent to have a great offense" as the OP states? No.

Well said, this team couldn't win the MAC with this talent. SLOW is not good. If it were, Iowa would be great.

Tough to be competitive with a roster full of kids from Iowa (their is simply a limited supply of big-time football talent in a small population state) and 4th team all-staters from other more populated states.

Plenty of D1 talent coming 3 hours away in Chicago area. Kids going to NU, WI, MI, OSU etc.

Our WR are well below average.
We are deep at RB but I'm not sure we are that good, the 1 closest to a feature back is a freshman.

Early on I was really impressed with Ruddock's pocket pressence and he has made some great decisions not only in the passing game but when to tuck it and run as he had a handful of rushing TD early in the year. He seems so far ahead of his time in the mental aspect of the position. However, he seems behind in the physical part. He lacks arm strength.

Beathard seems to have all the physical tools but wasn't ready to win the job at the start of the season and it showed Saturday as other than the 1 throw to Shumper that showed off his canon, he struggled. He hung on to the ball too many times in the pocket and he'll need to learn to put some touch and accuracy, not every throw has to be a bullet.

Combine Beathard's physical aspects with Ruddock's brain and we got a player. Dang... I guess it doesn't work like that.

Overall, I think the biggest weakness is the WR which makes it tough on a young QB and allows a defense to stack the box to limit our run game.

We have poor talent on offense outside of the OL and possibly QB. I love Weisman but he's not a legit Div1 back, turns the corner like a cruise ship. WRs are unbelievably poor, they can't catch the ball. Blocking and all that other stuff doesn't matter if you drop the ball.

I'll never understand why some want a flashier offense when we can't run what we have now.

The problem has and always will be talent.

I don't know why people think you have to have a rocket arm to be good? That's just stupid.

Doesn't hurt to have one... especially playing in windy conditions. Obviously it is only 1 of many things that can help make a good QB but isn't the be all, end all.

I disagree.. I think both have been (had been) fairly effective.. Coker ran for over 1300 yards on nearly 5 per carry in 2012. Not bad.

Maybe hat on hat in a power blocking formation, maybe(that's a big maybe) Coker was better, any zone stretch play Coker's footwork was awful he couldn't find a cutback lane if his life depended on it......Weisman's isn't much better, but at least he is trying to do it. Both guys make A-Rob look like Terrell Davis in his prime.

I will repeat what has been said a 1000 times already, this team lacks playmakers........That outlet pass that KMM caught against NW last week with all that open space and he got tackled for a 5 yard gain tells you everything you need to know about this offense.

Coker played great in 2011, but I don't think he was on the team in 2012. Weisman is better when healthy though. I hope he can rest it a lot this week then run over the last 2 opponents both of whom are susceptible to the run. He could still get 1300 yards with the bowl game included. Jake needs rest also.

On the positive side Smith is coming on strong at WR. Vandeberg has been sure handed. Canzari also looked good Saturday. The team has played well on the road. Let's put Purdont away early and get Canzari/ Daniels a lot of carries this week.

LOL, the above bolded is perhaps the most accurate description of Wiseman I have seen. I knew he reminded me of something and this is it.:D
