We have, quite possibly, the WORST

public relations department in all of major college athletics.

I could spend all day listing the train wrecks that department puts forth, but here's just a recent sampling:

1. Let's Get Mad Again
2. Letting the drug rumor mill run for days with no comment
3. The releases revolving around the 12 players in the hospital

If we want to talk about people who need to be fired....I'd start with this department.

Agreed, its a pretty long list. The drug thing was the worst but this is a close second.

What would you have them put out. They can't just start telling us things about individuals, even though you want them too. Too many privacy issues. With that said, they could probably handle things better.

Let's Get Mad Again was actually wildly successful. I don't know anyone that is happy with it.

Not to kill the messenger, but I kind of agree here. The biggest problem I see with the Iowa football public relations staff is they seem to react as if new medias like Twitter and message boards don't exist. I sympathize, because I'm not really a big fan of where media is going, but they need to do a better job of getting ahead of stories like this.

With this staff if you can't make it into a cool video on the program's portal page and add some pounding music it ain't worth doing.

There's a LOT of dead weight that could be cut at the U of I. They need some new ideas badly and someone with a clue apparently.

Don't forget the totally botched tribute to Sharm Scheuerman during the Indy halftime.

It's pretty poor to say the least. Yes, there are privacy issues that much be managed, but overall, they do a pretty poor job of marketing their product. Actually, very poor most of the time.

It's not the UI's job to respond to rumors. You would have complained in 2006 had they put out a release saying Drew Tate did not have a broken leg, as was rumored on the boards.

I kind of wonder if Barta and Ferentz don't handcuff the PR people quite a bit. As we all know, KF is famous for having some of the least informative pressers around, and he does it intentionally. He guards every scrap of inside info about his program like a junk yard dog guards a bone. Just as Iowa's offensive and defensive philosophies reflect exact what the head coach desires, I think the PR department follows suit: volunteering information that you aren't forced to give out can only hurt you. People who have made it there profession to skilfully disseminate information would love to be more artful and proactive, but I doubt KF lets them.

I understand you can't release personal information and you don't want to respond to message board rumors, however when they release information it seems to create a lot more questions than there were before.
