"We don't need to hire a superstar coach"

That's what Kirk just said in response to what he's looking for in hiring an offensive coordinator. Awesome Kirk, why would you want a superstar coach when you can safely promote another guy from within? This guy tries hard to keep people unexcited about the direction of his program.

don't forget context.

he was asked about budget of hires and KF said not a problem, but then said 'superstar' in relation to big salaries. he did say if he thought he needed to go higher than set, he'd go to AD and he didn't think it would be an issue.

name all the superstar coaches from his 2002 staff, for example. how many superstars on his staff when named in 1999?

Doesn't Kurk know that whomever makes the biggest splash ALWAYS wins! I mean, if the fans are not excited, what's the point of even hiring coaches?

Keep thinking small and you'll get small results. Ferentz has already seen his best days at Iowa.

fail.

this same thing was said about him and then his staff back in '99.

And you'll be the same guy still defending him when he wins seven games again next season. Apparently being completely irrelevant is okay for you, because that's what Iowa has been for over two years now.

It's not going to matter who is coaching next year, this team isn't going to be the 2002 or 2009 teams. The talent is not quite there yet, but think long term. If you think bringing in Mike Martz or some big name OC was going to solve all the problems you are delusional. It's about the Tommy and Joes most of the time.

I want Erb to be the o-coordinator pretty badly. He has been with the program a long time and has experience coaching multiple positions. He is also a top 25 recruiter.

BTW, 7 wins is pretty much the ceiling next year unless we get really lucky in a few games. The talent just ain't there, we're pretty young at many key spots.

Wow, two years? Has it been that long?

ETA: Dang, Ghost must type faster

And next year will most certainly make it three years in a row of being irrelevant. Sorry, but when your head coach makes top ten money, you expect him to at least entertain the idea of having a "superstar" offensive coordinator.

kf is saying you select the best guy for the position not necessarily the biggest name. most of the time a splash hire doesnt work out for iowa. just look at the bball team...alford, lick were both big names at the time. fran wasnt. kf wasnt the splash hire.
