Washpun Highlights

Should really think long and hard about a spot on the roster for this kid next year. Whether it be on scholarship or as a walk on. This kid can ball.

I'd take him for sure! The grades issue is a definite concern tho. It would be nice if he could prove himself in the classroom first. Hate to lose another one because of the lack of school work, again... That being said, I doubt he will walkon to Iowa to prove himself in the classroom and wait for a scholarship. At this point, that is what it will take. Then again, he could prove himself this fall/winter and in the spring.

I was both impressed with Washpun and extremely unimpressed with Prairie. I would like to see more of Washpun against more difficult opponents.

Here are the highlights against Davenport West. Oglesby had 30 Washpun 12

The more I see of him the more I think Fran should offer him. I'm aware that these are highlight videos and that Big Ten basketball is a whole other animal when compared to high school, but he's looked pretty poised and under control for as fast as he's running the court, which is exactly the type of player Iowa could use. Ideally I think Washpun and Olasani signing in the spring would round out a pretty great first full class for Fran.

The more these recruits keep passing us up the more I feel like Wes could really help us. As the 3rd point guard next year he could come in as a defensive stopper and help us guard quicker points that cully might struggle with. He could spend a lot of time working on his jump shot and hopefully in a year or two be able to contribute more offensively

He has more upside than most fallback recruits, but that is what he is.

If Fran McCaffery wanted him, he'd offer.

If there are academic issues, it isn't worth the risk today. If he becomes a Hawk and I think he would the second he was offered, redshirt him and get him in order on and off the floor. Let him develop for a year with no pressure and allow him to get comfortable in the classroom. If Payne is remotely healthy, there really are no minutes for a PG right now anyway, but there are next year.

I'm just not seeing it with those clips. He is more athletic than the other players granted. But I'm not seeing a refined offensive skillset. No step-back moves, doesn't change directions with the ball dynamically, seems to only play at one speed. He also seems to finish with his left exclusively.

I am not for or against Washpun, but think the fact he is not a scoring / shooting guard makes him a backup for Hawks given our lack of scoring punch. A walk on would be ideal, but he has offers from smaller schools already and if Cuonzo Martin extends the same offer at TN he extended at Missouri State, Washpun might be off the market. (This was touched on in today's CR Gazette as his mom and dad wore TN orange to the all star deal at Linn-Mar last night)

At some point we have to get better talent in the program in order to improve. Bringing in more of the same will result in more of the same. If Gatens, May, McCabe, Marble were better on the perimeter, I would feel differently, but we simply don't have enough viable scoring options IMO.

Why are we even talking about this kid? Not saying he isn't a talent but Fran has a handle on where he is going and if Wes in not in his plans, I will go with Fran over the posters that think every name thrown out here on this site is someone we must have. Fran is the man and he knows what he needs. Obviousily, Wes is marginal for him. Settle down Hawkeyes, Fran will come through.

Does anyone know if he is related to the Washpuns who played at City High? The oldest one (Eric?) played on City High's title team in '89 or so, and Kevin got kicked off the '91-92 team after an assault charge. I think City High was #1 in the state when he got kicked off. Kevin might have been the most talented City High basketball player in the last 25 years until Gatens came along.

The youngest brother (Justin?) was extremely talented but also ran into major legal problems.

Just curious if this kid is related to that family.

Did you check out the article/see that pic? That's why he is being talked about. Very few high school players have that explosiveness and athleticism. Can he develop into a major D1 player? That is the question.

I share your sentiment, but have to admit my confidence waivers with each passing day. Carter and Stokes seem to have moved on and I am not sure what we have to offer if Olaseni gets a Memphis offer. I am not sure how many cards McCaffrey has in the deck, but we won't have much of a hand if we miss out all three. I guess Hubbard is still in the mix, but it seems odd that after all the positive press, none of these kids wants to make a decision. I am of the opinion we can easily be outdone by a coach who says "look at our record / talent compared to theirs".

Good point. I wish we were at a better spot in the program to be able to offer him / red shirt him for a year and let McCaffrey and staff work with him on his jumper. Like May, Washpun is a phenomenal athlete, but that doesn't always translate to a solid basketball player at the high D1 level. Lots of athletes at the mid major and up level, so has he built his reputation schooling Iowa high school kids 2-3 levels under him athletically, or does he have the type of game that will translate to college?

Are you basing your opinion that these guys have moved on from solid inside information,or just because we have not heard much lately?
Has something changed from last week?

I have no clue either way,but if something has actually changed in terms of our chances for any of these players, then I yield to your info.

No intel, just my opinion. Carter took 4 visits last year, none of them to Iowa. Stokes visited TCU on 3-25 and is one of a couple of NYC players TCU is after, so that makes me think it is more than a coincidence he made a trip there. Leaving NYC to play ball is a lot easier if you go with a couple of friends.
