Was thinking to myself today......

Jake C. must still haunt Kirk Ferentz's dreams. The 2007 year in which Iowa did not make a bowl game was a lost recruiting season for Iowa. That was a season in which expectations were really high and JC was pegged as the man with a strong arm who could lead Iowa into uncharted territory.
Kirk's system of consistency is predicated on getting a good number of solid recruits every year. Any hiccups (of losing seasons or no bowls) will send a ripple through the O'Keefe-Parker Space-Time Continuum.
It is so important to get wins and get to decent bowls every year so that recruiting doesn't drop off. Because as we all know. A good number of recruits don't even see the field until their 3rd or 4th years in the program.Shonn Greene helped Iowa's recruiting gain respectability again. Some of that talent will start seeing the field next year and the year after.
What Greene did for the offense, Clayborn should have done for the defense. Eventually the defense will have some horses again, we'll have to wait a few years.
It sure would be nice to have a defense full of Bob Sanders's running around delivering Mack truck like hits. However you don't see those players coming out of high school any more. Not enough opportunities for good defensive play at that level. Many teams are spreading it out. Forcing man defense so you don't see that SS coming from 10 yards away to light a guy up as much.
So what I'm trying to say is, when Kirk talks about players not executing the scheme because of inexperience, injury, or lack of depth he's really saying that if the players we should have were there to make the plays, the scheme would work. One of many reasons it is so frustrating as a fan to hear no talk of changing the scheme for the players he has. Not with the current staff anyway.
Sorry for the length. Just had a lot of thoughts to get out in words.

Players like Bob Sanders dont come around everyday even at Iowa. He was a gem.
One of if not my all-time favorite player at Iowa. Tim Dwight was great too, but Bob is a shorter smaller guy who made the most out of what body he had been given. I guess the same can be said for Dwight, but Sanders is still my fav.

you talk like 07 set back the program. the 08 team lost 4 games by a total of like 12 pts and 09 was a bcs year. I wouldn't say 07 hurt iowas recruiting that bad.

It's crazy how many good Iowa guys were coming in and out of the program at that point. What we would do for that kind of talent right now. Am I just imagining this or are these some down years in Iowa talent? Tavian banks, Tim Dwight, then Mitch King and guys like that. We need some of those.
