First off I think Penns D is the real deal. I dont know if they are top 5 but they are in the top 15 for sure.
Second what happens if we would have got that pick that was missed? What happens if one of those drops was caught and we got a first down?
The game was close and it was lost on lack of execution. On the flip side when the boys are playing right and executing, well we all know what we can be.
As for D well, we have some problems. The line is never going to be world beaters, they can almost hold thier own, but need some back up. With the speed we have behind them this year, we need for them to close those gaps faster. Move up and meet them better. Some of the runs Penn had, should have not gotten but about half the yards they did, some of that was poor tackling some of it was not moving up fast enough. I said something about that in the non-cons, and a week or two later it looked like we were doing much better as far as the LB's meeting people in the gap, but go back and watch the Penn game, for every step forward our guys take, thier guy takes two. Some of our players are worse at this than others, but I hope they will soon learn it is easier to put the hit on, then wait for them to put the hit on you, plus it shuts down thier run game. Now these are just my views and everyone has their own, but I beleive if our LB's and DB's (when they know it's a run) can use their speed to close the gaps sooner, we will be a tough team to run against. After that I dare you to try and throw it all game long against our secondary.
Can someone look at the Pitt game, they are avg 166 or so rushing a game but didnt we hold them to under 140? Look and see where our guys were playing (how deep) compared to the PSU game. Watch them both and tell me I am wrong, that we didnt get up there and meet Pitt better than we did in the PSU game. I could be wrong as I have not watched parts of both games back to back, but something changed.

Just an observation- NW appears to be decent against tackle to tackle runs but the short to long passing game should be there for Iowa. Vandenberg needs to be let loose, if he as few attempts as he had against PSU then we are in deep ****. Outside of NW's Army debacle they have been ok against the straight rush, we really can't just hand it off to Coker for off tackle plays time and time again. Our O line seems to be able to hold up for pass protection much better than run blocking- just protect Vandenberg long enough to get off a pass. Persa doesn't appear to be nearly as comfortable running the ball as he did pre-injury, he still has a bit of a limp. With that said we need to make him hurry his throws a bit, contain will still be important but maybe not as much as pressure on him. Just an observation.

Neither will Iowa losing a home game to a team that the recruits know they have owned in recent history.
I don't view boos as a bad thing. Its when the fans stop caring altogether that you have a problem. Booing and cheering both show passion.
First, Jon isn't going to like you using the Lord's name in vain.
Second, the middle of the line has NOT played well. The cut-back lanes have not been open, the pocket has been folded right up the middle, and the interior blitz reads have been more than suspect.
Gettis is doing fine, but the team hasn't really found someone to step in and dominate at the other guard spot all the way back to last year when the Mac and Gettis went down. It might not be as significant an issue if the team didn't have an undersized center, or if they had a QB that was a little more adept at handling pressure.

We must be watching different games, the cut back lanes have been there all year, in fact any runs over 10 yards that Coker has this year I would bet came from cutting back.
As far as the pocket and blitzing, other than last week this OL has done an outstanding job in pass protection. Going into last week I think JVB had only been sacked 2 or 3 times so they must be doing something right.

There was a definite lack of execution in the PSU game. There were only a couple of guys playing with any sense of urgency the entire game. One of those was Morris. He looked like one of the few players on the Iowa roster that was actually glad to be at that game. I mean, honestly, how can you not be ready to play at Happy Valley? What is really disturbing is the lack of leadership shown by McNutt. That has to be the worst game I have seen him play. The coaches did not prepare Iowa for this game. How is it after 2 weeks to prepare, that Iowa has to call a time out to get players on the field?

Yes, shown more than ever after the PSU game, Iowa will need to win with its offense. The only way Iowa can win against Northwestern is if Iowa's offense opens with the no-huddle hurry-up offense and uses it exclusively throughout the game because, IMO, Iowa will also need to score at least 28 points.
The offense might also be able to give the defense a blow.
Let's force some turnovers.
Oh, and this: if Iowa's offense is as productive as it needs to be to win, Iowa's defense won't be 'tuckered' at the end. For Iowa to beat NW, the offense must take over - this year, every year.
