Was Iowa Really Preseason #1 in 1988?

For some reason I was thinking it was Kent Hill who got the ball in the face in 1987 or 1988, but maybe it was Horton. But I know it was one of those two players for sure, and I remember the same thing happening to Jaacks.

I never could stand Indiana basketball, Bobby Knight, or their players. It didn't help matters any when Indiana's fans cheered when Luke Recker got hurt up there in 2002, even though Knight wasn't their coach by that point.

I think it was Kent Hill one of the times. And I was thinking, Indiana you better not **** us off. Would have been one hell of a brawl with Hill (ex football player), Horton, and Lorenzen aka (Vanilla Gorilla) coming after them.

Tom Davis used to have his teams aggressively guard the in-bounds pass right up to (and frequently over) the line, and EH often got the duty. As I recall, Bobby (there, I said it...) Knight had one of his thugs throw the ball directly into Ed's face. Was clearly a direct attempt to harm and intimidate. I don't recall whether Ed retaliated; IIRC he may have and received a technical. I recall Davis consoling him immediately after. Anyone else recall that?

Pretty sure they did this to Brad "Lowdog" Lohaus in 1987. I think it was the 2nd time we played them that year. We were 18-0 and they beat us.

Indiana did beat us the 2nd time we played them that year, but it was actually OSU that handed us our first loss (in Iowa City) that year when we were #1. That had to have been one of the most disappointing days in my Hawkeye fanhood, other than losing to UNLV in the Elite 8 that year.

And it was OSU that beat the football team in 1985 when we were #1.

D@mn you, OSU!

I stand corrected; it was Hill.

It appears there were several instances in which an Iowa player was deliberately hit in the face with the ball while guarding an in-bounds pass in the late 80s, at least twice by Bobby Knight-coached players:

Feb. 21, 1987 - Brad Lohaus, during game with Indiana. The linked article mentions an earlier incident that season but doesn't mention the opponent or the Iowa player.

March 12, 1988 - Kent Hill hit in the face by a ball thrown by Indiana's Todd Jadlow. Hill was ejected when he retaliated by poking Jadlow in the face.

It was the 88-89 Sporting News mag that had BJ and Herky on the cover with the caption "Iowa Is No.1" Herky is wearing a big foam number 1 finger, and BJ is holding a basketball with a big black I. It is literally right here in front of me, and if I were smart enough, I would post it on here so everyone could see it.

Scan that puppy and post it. It might be enough to get me through the brutal next couple of years.

I like how both of these were against Indiana.. And Bobby Knight's response to it - was only that Indiana should have gotten more FT's because of the technicals. What a jacka$$.
