walk ons

The University of Iowa has a great history with developing walkons into good players, I fully expect that a few of these players will be contributing scholarship athletes as well before their careers are over.

That's really going out on a limb.

That's the way it has been around here for at least forty years.

You know those “exit counseling” things they make you go to if you had fed loans? (maybe you didn’t, not sure...)

Anyway, when I was at mine I sat next to a kid talking to his buddy about how he financed 4 years, no grants, no scholarships.....tuition/books/housing/meal card....to the tune of $120 something grand at Briar Cliff. And that was like 15 or 16 years ago. He seriously acted like it wasn’t no thang. I would have puked on my shoes.
It's amazing how much teenage kids can make these days if they're willing to work.

When I was that age kids flipped burgers, bagged groceries, and pumped gas, and those jobs were frequently handed down from older siblings. If you were REALLY lucky you got a farm labor job which could pay a lot better than minimum wage (which was $3.35 for a long time.)

Our HS football coach builds decks and patios in the summer and always has more demand for student help than he can take on.

Of course some students can make good coin year round without having to do manual labor, if they can find the right social media type of niche.

I know a kid who welds on the side. He had a LLC as soon as he was old enough to obtain one. Not sure what the minimum age is for that or if a parent can sign off if under eighteen. I know welders can make some decent jack.
