While I think intense and personal heated local rivalries are a part of what makes college football special. It is clear that the Iowa State game is in the way of our National Championship ambitions. Maybe a few years ago this was not the case because we didn't have so much talent and we were just trying to keep games close against better teams a steal a win or a good season in the end. But things are different now and we need to look higher than just Iowa State.
The problem, 1977Hawkeye, is the money.
Anybody good, is going to want a rematch at their place. So then we lose a home game. And I guess we can't afford that.
Actually, anybody "good" won't come to Iowa City without huge guarantees.
What we SHOULD do is, on the every-other-year scenario, seek out some neutral-site games with some teams that could also use the quasi-road-trip-as-vacation. The K-State game at Arrowhead is a good example.
If the places (Orlando, for example, just initiated a "kickoff classic"-type game) know we are interested and will show up in force every second or third year, we'll get the invites.
Playing a U$C might be cool. Texas schools would be awesome. Playing Oklahoma in a pro stadium would be awesome. Hell, why not go "international"? If Penn State and UCF can play in Ireland, why can't the Hawks go somewhere?
