Very solid defensive effort tonight

Especially in the first half, Iowa's tough D, not allowing back door baskets, nor many 3's from NW, allowed Iowa to collect a nice Big Ten W.

Very good game plan by our staff and Congrats to the Hawkeyes, as they deserved to be rewarded with this win.

Did they try any back door cuts? It seemed like a completely different NW offense than what I was accustomed to.
They didn't try the back door cuts because we didn't overplay the passing lanes. That is part of the plan. At least that is what I think the plan was. :) They had one late in the game, but for the most part, the Hawks D was in position to defend the back door.

I remember the same one that you do and I asked my buddy if that was the first one of the game. I honestly don't think it was because of Iowa's style, they just seemed content to go with the dribble ball reversal around the arc. I wasn't quite sure what they were trying to accomplish with that.

I do know it is part of the NW offense. I don't know why (specifically) why they didn't do more. I can only assume they didn't see the back door available since it is a sight play (offensive player gets a step on the defender) and not a play that is called in the huddle. I am trying to think positive and assume the Iowa defense played well and focused on not leaving the back door open. :)

I am not trying to hate, I am just kinda thinking out loud with you about it. I remember the days of Tim Doyle giving all sorts back cuts, and the basis of the system is that back cut. I didn't even see players attempting those cuts tonight which confuses me because that is what I think of when I think of NW basketball. Maybe Carmody is adjusting to a slightly more athletic type that is on his team now.

That (what you said about Carmody adjusting) could be. I am choosing the line of thinking that is was the Hawks D. :)

We may see something different from NW when we play in Evanston. I know they were running back doors when they were playing teams like MSU, Purdue, and OSU that put more pressure on the passing lanes.

Carmody said in the postgame that they did not bring it on defense or offense tonite..just a flat effort. I agree...but I also think that our guys were playing good defense as well. Eric May buried Crawford, who had about his worst game as a Cat.
Eric May is becoming a killer defender...after guarding Battle,Turner,ect...he is not afraid of anyone.

It's a tweaked version of the Princeton offense and back door cuts are still very important. Iowa's D shut them down. Great preparation tonight, better execution.
