Vandy and throwing the ball away.

I hope Vandy can learn to throw the ball away. Stanzi cost us a chance to win several games last year by being sacked. I have heard several announcers say the worst thing that can happen in the two minute drill is to be sacked.

1. This is common sense, getting sacked in the 2-minute drill is never good.

2. Several times, Stanzi didn't even have time to throw the ball away. The Arizona game in particular stands out in this regard.

3. The sack Stanzi took from Watt in the Wisconsin game was certainly bad. But Watt only just barely got him, and Stanzi had slipped away from those kinds of plays numerous times before in his career (Morgan in the Orange Bowl nearly had him, but Stanzi slipped away somehow). That's something Stanzi does 7 times out of 10 on a play like that, Watt just made the play.

No, the D cost us several games last year by not being able to get 1 freaking stop. If the D would have gotten just one more stop Iowa wouldn't have had to go to a 2 minute drill.

Is there anything more annoying in football than when a QB runs out of bounds for a two yard sack instead of throwing the ball away? Stanzi did it a couple of times last year, Jay Cutler does it a lot.

Yes, there is something more annoying:
Playing for the conference championship as a big underdog in an away game with a lot of momentum and just needing a field goal to win the game and conference and having plenty of time/timeouts to do it but then just sitting on the ball and hoping for the best in overtime.

That's more annoying.

Watch Vandenberg's games back in '09. He was pretty quick to throw the ball away. In fact, he was maybe even too quick to throw the ball away.

However, regardless, he's definitely a guy who isn't afraid of throwing the ball away. I think that we're going to end up being pretty pleased about his decision making this year. Just a hunch ....
