Vander Zee

I think he got some good reps and along with Weetjen, both create some issues for defense. I was happy to see Vander Zee back and making a few key catches. Seems we are doing our best to get Weetjen into the offense too. I like it!

The problem with the Wetjen thing is he gets so few snaps on offense they pretty much know he's gonna get the rock whenever he's out there. Need to use him as a diversion.

Agreed. The jet sweep to the far side was sniffed out pretty easy. I liked how we used him against Indiana. Caught a slant and a screen. He does scare me because he gets a bit ballsy. His decisions on punts sometimes scare me. But I like his acceleration after he gets the rock in his hand. But you are absolutely right. Use him more and use him as a decoy if need be.

I am really happy about Vander Zee. Blocks well, runs great routes, and has length. Different type of target. You get him out there with Phillips, Weetjen it could be fun to watch.

All it would take is lining him up in a split backfield with no intent on giving him the ball.

If you're PSU's defense and when the huddle breaks it's Wetjen and Moulton in the backfield, that alone is going to freak you out and make you tilt like a pinball machine. Don't even have to give him the ball, just put him in motion and read it. Do it at the right opportune time and you'll even get them to burn a timeout.

RS Freshman Vonnahme seems to be also coming along as a second tall target. Maybe Iowa can generate some red zone passing to complement the excellent running game.
He seems to have emerged as TE1. Had a bit of the yips early on, but seems to have settled in. Hopefully the game is slowing down for him. Granted I think we're fairly thin there. Large had a catch or two. Almost came down with a ball down by the goal line. I'm guessing being a converted fullback, his hands are still developing. One thing I do know, is he can block! LOL.

Of course we are excited to see Vander Zee back. He is from Rock Rapids!

Large has been a welcome surprise. Dordt isn’t exactly a high level program. I love watching the guy. All blue collar.

RVZ and Lutmer from CL/GLR, Van Kekerix from Rock Valley, and Stecker from Spirit lake.

Lots of guys from up here in no man's land.

Side note, Stecker is the same size as RVZ and faster. Watched him all 4 years in track.

10.92 100m, 21.97 200m. High jumper too. He's a walk-on but who knows?

Yeah. Lutmer is related to an attorney in RR who is the lead in my grandfather/fathers 100;year old law firm.

The jet sweep is now what the wildcat became. It's no longer a surprise and as such much less effective than when it was new.
As Fry said, when your fastest player comes in and lines up to go in motion across the backfield people notice.

Don't forget about Dayton Howard, who at 6'5" had the best catch of the season vs Rutgers. Pair him with VZ, and you've FINALLY got some height at the WR position.

It's like if Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson were on the same team.

Yes, our opponents have pretty effectively sniffed out the jet sweep to Wetjen. Which is why they should be using it as a decoy as Fry suggested. If you put him in motion it makes the defense hesitate for just a split second. Which can make something else work in our favor.

RVZ looked pretty good played close to 30 snaps. I woulda guessed closer to 10-15 tops woulda been what they put him out there for. So that's great news he's feeling good we'll need more of him. I do wish they'd use him for what he'd be great at and that's jump balls in the redzone. We had a 2nd and short inside the 20 yard line on of the possessions with him lined up to the right and I thought for sure they'd try that with him. But nope. Use him like they did Brandon Smith but more. Come on Lester

Possible they were saving that for when it is needed more than this game. If you can run it down their throats and you're up by a comfortable margin the whole game, you hold off on that bag of tricks. I agree with the idea and I do think we'll see it at some point.
