NCAAF Iowa QB still fueled by 2009 loss to OSU - ESPN

This was a good read. From article:

"That sack on third down, I remember that thing vividly," Vandenberg told ESPN.com. "The ball needed to come out. It would have been a long field goal, but we could have tried. Instead, we had to take a shot for the end zone, and you can't expect that to [work]."

Vandenberg views the Ohio State game as a "great stepping stone" in his career. He returned to a reserve role in 2010 before taking over for Stanzi last season, passing for 3,022 yards with 25 touchdown strikes and seven interceptions.

He enters his senior season as the Big Ten's most prolific passing quarterback.

Asked if he's still motivated by the Ohio State loss, Vandenberg replied, "Absolutely."

"That was a tough circumstance he was playing in," Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz said, "to all of a sudden be our starter, and to go into one of the toughest, if not the toughest, environments in our conference. Basically, it ended up being the championship game for that year. He may have taken a sack, but we had some drops, too, that may have changed the game. I thought he really played admirably."

T. Stross drops killed us in that game!

Yes. I remember him looking at his hands numerous times after drops.

Um, wouldn't the question be, "The tape from last year shows a similar issue regarding your ability to handle the blitz. How do you overcome that shortcoming in your game?"

The problem for STross was that he was used to catching Stanzi's throws at one velocity, and then couldn't adjust to Vandy's much faster velocity.

Just another reason why it is hard to win big games on the road with a second-string QB?

If Stanzi doesn't go down, we would have gone 13-0 that year IMHO

Bolded = true.

Also, time to let it go.

With Stanzi they for sure beat Northwestern and had a better chance to beat OSU. Not only was Stanzi out for the OSU game but so was Wegher and Robinson was banged up. With Stanzi, they probably do win. Not only did Stross drop a TD but I believe that Iowa missed a FG early on that could have made a difference.

First possession of second half ended like this. 1st and goal at the 7, Robinson runs to the 4. Iowa calls timeout (Why?), Robinson for a one yard loss, Stross drops TD pass, Murray misses 22 yd fg. Talk about a horrible series of events.

nothing against stanzi but i think part of the reason we were in the osu game in 2009 was because jvb was the qb...osu didnt know what to expect with him at qb so it made it hard to scout us with him at qb...they would have been able to scout stanzi easily with all the tape on him. osu was a better team than iowa that yr but jvb gave us a little unknown factor that i think helped us keep it close.

Bingo. It's tough to prepare for a guy when you have no clue what he can do. All they had was 2.5 quarters of NW film where he looked like he had a hard time tying his shoes. JVB made some mistakes against OSU but threw a lot of balls into tight spots down the field that Stanzi couldn't have. You could tell OSU defenders were surprised by the zip on the ball.

Also for the record the would be TD in the 1st Q that Stross dropped was one of the best throws of JVB's career. Stross was in an awkward spot sliding; he let the ball get into his pads and it predictably ricocheted out of there. Tough play but one you have to make.

I can't recall exactly, but didn't Stross drop a second pass in front of the endzone that would of most likely been a touchdown as well.

As far as JVB's different velocity, McNutt & DJK didn't seem to have much trouble.

Ferentz's theory during that game and most games.

Putting the fear of failure ahead of the chance of winning.

Iowa has beaten OSU 14 times total, we had an opportunity to take the game into our own hands and win the game. Instead, like usual, Kip, Kurt, Kirk whatever you want to call him. Tucked tail and played for OT, how that work out for us? Oh yeah that's right we lost because our coach is to scared to take a shot at an opportunity that has happened once since 1991. Good call coach, no great call.

Indeed. A lame excuse.

It wasn't too hard for Northwestern or Minnesota too defend him. Ohio State's game plan was to make JVB beat them so they didn't play aggressively.

Neither did Ohio State defenders... Zing!

People also forget the pick 6 Vandenberg threw that an OSU player was lined up offsides and the last scoring drive another int go right through the OSU player's hands and landed in Moeaki's lap. People saying he gave Iowa a better chance than Stanzi?? Really?? Are you ******* joking me??

Sort of true. They didn't believe JVB had the skills to beat them, so they decided not to take any big defensive risks by blitzing. Turns out that was the best possible situation for JVB.

Had Stanzi been there they may have done more blitzing which may or may not have worked out for them. We may have scored some long TDs in that case or they may have shut us down.

I do know we were a much better offense in 2009 with Stanzi at the helm overall. In a one game situation, there's a lot of variation though.

he wasnt prepared against nw. watch the minny game again and he was little more than a glorified hand that gave the ball to the rb. our coaches took him out of the game in the minny game. some of the reason the coaches gave him opportunity against osu is they had nothing to lose. with a backup qb against a good osu team we should have lost so why not go after them. but against minny we should win even with a back up. that is why every loss to minny stings.

Are we seriously putting Trey Stross on the same level as McNutt and DJK?
