Vandenberg moves in...

The coaches were willing to move Stanzi in at QB ahead of the veteran, based on his play and potential. Could a similar thing happen this next spring. I think Vandenberg could give us a better TD to Int ratio. Wouldn't that be a story?!

Yes it would, but it won't happen.

i like qbs with completion percentages higher that 50 percent.

also 17:15 > 2:5.... just sayin
 
No it won't happen and shouldn't happen. Other than a veteran starter with a young backup their aren't many similarites. JC was 7-6 as a starter Ricky is 19-4(?). The JC led team didn't even make a bowl game and Ricky's teams have been to a New Year's Day and a BCS game and WON both. James will get his opportunity but let's hope it's in 2011 because if it's next year then that means Ricky is hurt again.

If I could disagree more than 100% I would do so. Kirk Ferentz has made it clear he prefers experienced players, but he's also made it clear the reason why he prefers experinced players is that they typically play more consistently and commit fewer mistakes.

As much as I like RS as a QB nobody can dispute he makes frequent mistakes with the football and that has to drive KF nuts. RS has a gunslinger mentality but thats not necessarily an asset in KF's mind. He would much prefer Trent Dilfer to Brett Farve.

If the Mandendberg can demonstrate this spring he can play consistent and near mistake free I think he at least splits time early in the season.

I agree to disagree more. Stanzi is a proven winner. Yeah he may keep the opposing team in the game and make a lot of mistakes, but the bottom line is he just wins the game. JC never had the issues with turnovers the way that Stanzi does, but whats the difference? Stanzi just wins. Like another poster says, the only way Vandy is the starter next year, is if Stanzi is injured.
 
Yes Stanzi got in over the "veteran" last year, but that was because the "veteran" had a problem winning games. That is one thing that Stanzi doesn't have a problem with. The Hawkeyes are 16-3 in games that Stanzi has started and finished in the last 2 years and they were 10-0 this year. I love Vandy as much as the next guy and the potential that he brings, but he will have his shot in 2011.
 
He's what? 18-4 or something like that? Why are so many people wanting to pull the plug on him? This is why clown fans make fun of us so much. We as fans have "backup player" syndrome.

Ah-ha!! Well said. The real point here is RS is a good leader and knows how to lead his team to victory....that is why he is #1, not because he had a better TD:TO ratio (which is obviously not the case anyway). As far as KF not wanting a gunslinger--what was that whole three years of Drew Tate about then?? Tate was a gunslinger and a good leader (his emotions made him difficult at times though - IMO), but his qualities as a QB was everything a coach wants. RS is maybe 60-70% the gunslinger that DT was.

Tate threw the ball a lot and had a gusnlinger mentality but he also very good at taking care of the football.
 
If I remember correctly, KF was in favor of keeping JC in at qb but eventually gave in to KOK's wishes. Kirk is loyal to the more experienced player. There is no way he's going to replace Stanzi, who btw is now 18-4 as a starter. No other stat is worth more than that.
 
This was Ricky Stanzi's team in 2009 and it will be in 2010. Ricky Stanzi will be the starter for Iowa football and will take every meaningful snap unless injured.
 
If the coaches weren't willing to pull Stanzi during the Indiana game, then there is no way they will pull him in favor of Vandenberg for the starting job next year. Yes, Stanzi throws interceptions and floats the ball a lot, but he has leadership and commands the offense. Hopefully Vandenberg can get more playing time next year in a few games that are blow-outs.
