Sophomore men’s basketball player Jarrod Uthoff will represent the University of Iowa on the East Coast All-Stars later this month. Uthoff and the All-Stars will compete in the Four Nations Cup in Tallin, Estonia, July 25-27.

Uthoff (6-foot-8, 200 pounds) will depart for a two-day training camp, held at Fordham University, July 20-21. After two days of training, the team will depart the states and arrive in Estonia the evening of July 22.

The All-Stars will play an exhibition contest against an Estonian Club team in the 23rd and then will have a practice day before competition begins on July 25. The All Stars will play three games against the top FIBA National Teams of Belarus, Estonia, and the Slovak Republic.

The 12-man roster includes two players each from Syracuse and Lycoming, and one each from Iowa, Louisville, North Colorado, Notre Dame, UConn, Providence, West Virginia and Binghamton. The team is comprised of six seniors, five sophomores and one junior.

This marks the third consecutive season that a Hawkeye has traveled to Estonia with the East Coast All-Stars. In 2011, Matt Gatens and Bryce Cartwright traveled overseas, while Zach McCabe went last year.

The Iowa men’s basketball program definitely has an international theme this summer. Junior Aaron White traveled to Kazan, Russia, for the World University Games with Team USA earlier this month. In August, the entire UI men’s basketball team will travel to the United Kingdom and France in August to play six exhibition games.

Ah yes, the four nations - Estonia, Belarus, Slovak Republic and the East Coast. Such a rich history and tradition shared by these nations. For my money, this is one of the greatest rivalries in all of sport.

Is the country East Coast anywhere near Ivory Coast?

Happened to catch the end of the WUG Finals last nite....Russia beat Australia for the title. Home team wins. Russians looked very good. At least one of those guys got drafted around 18 in the 1st round of the NBA draft last month..Karasev? Serbia,Russia,Canada and Australia were the final four...bunch of white guys mainly, who are big and can shoot.

most competitive 'real' games he has played in since high school? Or maybe ever considering these teams are composed of at least mostly club players, even if they are bad clubs. I'm glad that he gets some kind of 'real' game experience.

That being said, this team should probably drop the All-Stars from their name, and yes the competition is going to be poor compared to the B1G.

Better than nothing I guess?

I'm sure the selection process for this team goes something like "Hello there coach of relatively well-known team! Who would you like to have play for us this year?"

And Fran was all like, "Lemme put Uthoff on that team right there"

I am really happy for Uthoff. An opportunity to travel abroad, the chance to get back into competitive basketball in real game situations, and the attention this series brings to the Hawkeye Basketball Program add up to a very positive experience. I really believe this is a quality young man who will be a great addition to the Hawks over the next three years.

What attention? Who on EARTH watches these games or even knew they existed? I like the optimism, but wow...

An "all star" who has yet to play a second of d1 ball?

Well, you've made it clear that the only metric of player performance that truly matters is how well a player plays in practice, BasketballMan.

You've got the all-access pass. So, you tell us: is Uthoff an All-Star?

Dang, sounds like he's really struggling over there. Either the kid just aint touching the ball, or maybe some folks have him simply overrated to begin with. I guess time will tell.

Is your screen name ironic? Like calling a fat guy "slim?"

Sounds as if Russ Smith of Louisville has decided this team is all about him. He took 25 of the 68 shots the team took and scored 29 points. No one else on the team scored in double figures.

Go figure....

They more than likely are fundamentally sound and pass the ball.....
