user experience

I prefer uBlock Origin & Disconnect.me for Chrome.

On Android, I use Brave Browser. It has all the ad-blocking stuff built-in so you don't need extra plugins.

I know it's taking money out of HN.com's pocket, but until they reign in the obnoxiousness of the ads, I'll continue to do it. If the ads weren't as annoying, and I didn't have to worry about malicious ads, I would be more willing to let them come through. The "bad guys" realized a long time ago that it's much easier to hack an ad network to serve up malicious code to thousands of sites (and millions if not billions of users), than it is to try and hack every site. And there are too many ad networks in use on here to ensure they're all safe.

Here's an image of how many other sites are connected to HN.com. Granted, not all of these are ad networks, some are legitimate connections (like google analytics, google fonts, etc.) But well over half of them are ad networks.

Here's the same page with Disconnect.me and uBlock Origin enabled. Notice all of the sites with the circle/slash through it now. It's blocking those from tracking you, and from potentially introducing malicious content into your browser.
