USC Loss

Yeah heard Kirk talk about this in his post game. Unsure of how badly they are injured but cross fingers they will be back by the weekend

Wouldn't have known about any of that watching the broadcast on tv those guys only cared about the couple of USC guys that went out. If the players weren't on the field laying down holding up the game the broadcasters weren't paying attention to who was in/out on the line.

At one point I noticed that 71 was in at RT for Dunker in the 2nd half and I was like damn WTF. But it made all the sense in the world that Iowa wasn't able to run the ball on them in the 2nd half like we did the 1st. Sucks to get shut out in the 2nd half like that as easily as we moved the ball in the 1st. We rely heavily on our Oline. I think how this game went typifies that.

Over the years I have been impressed with BTN football broadcasts given its 3rd tier status.

But that Iowa-USC broadcast has to be the lowest quality of broadcast I have ever seen by the BTN. Especially disappointing if you consider that was probably BTN's biggest game of the year.

I still think that 3rd and 7 run was dumb. I know they were trying to set up a shorter 4th down...I get it. But that still wasn't the right call there. The way that game was going it was pretty much 4th

I thought it was a bad call at the time, also. Had I known that three starting O linemen were out I would have thrown something at the TV.

You just throw it. If it doesn't work you throw it again and live with it. You take a 30% play twice in a row over a 5% play once because A) the odds are mathematically better anyway, and B) after your 5% play doesn't work now the defense knows for sure what's coming. Mind-blowing to me.

Say they get 5 yards and now it's 4th and 2. Do any of us think that's a better situation to be in?

Also, I love Phil Parker but I can't for the life of me understand why he never blitzes once. I understand if that's your scheme and you haven't built your team around it, but when the wheels started coming off in Q3 you have to try something. I get it that a pass rush leaves your DBs on a island, but it ain't gonna frickin matter because they're getting burned for 20 yards one after another after another the way it is. We all know the cliche about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, after four or five of those burns I'm standing 8 guys up and bringing the house at Maiava. That 4th quarter (whole 2nd half really) was the Hawks' Alamo of that game. You have no choice but to start shooting bullets till you're out of ammo.

I wish a reporter would ask him that. Not even in a snarky or sarcastic way. Phil's smart. I'd love to hear him get asked why he never once brings a pass rush even when getting absolutely torched to stop the bleeding.

Again, I don't say that as one of those d-bags who want coaches called on the carpet. I'd honestly like to know his philosophy behind it. If you line it up with 8 guys showing, at least make 'em call a timeout and mix it up...

And they did exactly what you suggest -- put extra guys at the LOS, brought guys from all over the field, never let him get comfortable or get his timing down, which really impacted his accuracy. Give him time with those NFL WRs, and sooner or later they're gonna make you pay. The blueprint was there. Phil just chose to not use it.
The odd thing is, for the first 8 games of the season Parker was blitzing at a significantly higher % than past seasons. And I think it really helped take some of the pressure off his inexperienced LBs. Perhaps giving up the winning TD to Indiana on a full-on blitz left a scar.

And they did exactly what you suggest -- put extra guys at the LOS, brought guys from all over the field, never let him get comfortable or get his timing down, which really impacted his accuracy. Give him time with those NFL WRs, and sooner or later they're gonna make you pay. The blueprint was there. Phil just chose to not use it.

And I get not blitzing with our defense. The scheme isn't built for it. But nothing was working and we were gushing blood at the time. If you're skidding on ice about to run in front of a semi and can't stop with the brakes or steering wheel, you gotta think outside the box, start dropping it in neutral, try to take the ditch, throw it in reverse...something...

If you're about to end up dead anyway you try different shit until that happens.
