US National Team About to Sell Out Ravens Stadium

Sure they might sell out, but 65% won't be rooting for the U.S.

I'm not sure this matters. First of all, 30,000 of them will be. Second of all, most of the Salvadoran fans live in this country. Third, the fact that 40,000 of them are showing up to watch their team play the U.S. team tells you how our reputation has grown - especially since only 10,000 of them showed up in Miami to watch them against their arch rival Honduras. Finally, the success of soccer in our region has a direct impact on the success of U.S. soccer in general, since MLS is the top feeder league for Central American and Caribbean talent.

It isn't an isolated incident, just one of the more gory ones that we know about. Get off the high horse here and think that was a blip on the radar. The history of the sport is ugly and hasn't done a whole lot to change my perception of the sport.
I think an amateur match in a small town in Northeast Brazil is the definition of "Isolated incident".

If hooliganism truly is the reason why you don't like soccer, more power to you. It doesn't really matter to me if people don't like the sport. The only thing that mystifies me is when these people claim that no one else does either. That's just blind.

However, it's an oversimplification to claim that soccer is responsible for violent fan behavior. Disaffected youth is not bred through sport.

Millions of soccer matches take place around the world with hundreds of millions of attendees every year without a single incident of violence. If hooliganism was inherent to the sport, we'd have seen it accompany MLS, and it hasn't...even while SF Giants fans are beaten into comas, Raiders' fans are shooting people, Indiana Pacers are punching people in Detroit's stands and fatal riots break out after Red Sox games.

You can say you hate sports, you can say you hate alcohol, you can say that you hate the economic policies which breed a hostile lower class, but to say you hate soccer is letting the tail wag the dog.

My best guess is, though, that you hate soccer just because you do, and you seize on its most undesirable elements to help you win an unwinable argument, which is that soccer is an "epic fail" in this country (your words).

That is not the only reason as you say I don't like soccer.

Here is what Soccer is to me and you can put all your arguments back at me if you like.

Is soccer played on an even playing field? No, corruption withing the sport shows fixing of matches, yes the sport is trying to eliminate that, but it is one of the more prominent sports for match fixing.

One thing other sports are trying to take out the game are faking of injuries. Soccer players should all win Oscars for their efforts to draw penalties and fake injuries, it is pretty sad. The NBA is the next worse of players doing so, it is just as sad.

Soccer is one of the most racist sports...period, I am actually surprised that soccer isn't most popular in the Southern states where the KKK is most predominant because it is okay and expected overseas to shout the n-word and things like gorilla.

There are a multitude of reasons that I don't like the sport of soccer, but the athletes for the most part aren't why. Also, I did not say this has carried over the the US either. There have been minor incidents at soccer matches in the US, but nothing major and I would be surprised if anything major took place to be honest. Maybe that is why foreign fans come to see their teams play in the US without the fear of some major act taking place.

I have never claimed people in the US don't like the sport, but I still don't see it as being a huge success either, soccer is in its fetal stages of trying to be a major sport and I don't see what you do. Maybe it is my dislike of the sport, or not. Either way I have a question for you and all the soccer fans here:

When BTN/ESPN/etc. shows college soccer do you get excited to watch it?

I don't hate soccer, I just am not a fan of the sport, but it also doesn't mean I don't think the players are some of the best athletes out there either. On average how many miles do they run during a match, the endurance that they have is amazing. Again, I am just not a fan of the sport and I think back to what Beckham was supposed to do for the sport it was an epic fail. Soccer has capitalized where Tennis has failed and I think that is about the only thing soccer has displaced in this Country at this point.

Gotta agree with Wunder. It's pretty lame to say you don't like the sport because of rare violent outbursts. Do you have any idea how many soccer games are played worldwide? When there are that many games incidents are going to happen at some point. Certainly so in countries where lawlessness is abundant. Big passionate crowds, alcohol, gambling, and in some cases corruption aren't always a good mix. It doesn't make it okay, but when you think about how many games are played on a daily basis I think the term "isolated" is more than appropriate. It's kinda like what my Dad used to tell me before flying for the first time... plane crashes are incredibly rare when you consider how many flights there are daily. You have a much better chance of dying in a car accident than in a plane crash.

All of your reasons are fine if you believe them. Soccer doesn't need you.

My only issue with what you post is when you deny that soccer is becoming successful in this country.

I can tolerate other points of view. I can't suffer fools, though.

This makes much more sense. Can't argue with anything you pointed out here. It drives me freaking insane to see the players constantly hitting the grass and acting like they just broke there leg every time they get touched. I know not all players do it, but it's pretty pathetic. It's also pretty boring watching games that don't matter because a lot of times they just kick the ball around to stall and run clock. It's like watching paint dry.

Wondergrape, don't let your frustration that Iowa hasn't gotten a commit in basketball carry over to this forum.

I am not denying it success in the fetal stages here, talk to me in a decade and see if it competes with the major sports, or becomes a major sport in this Country. It has overtaken Tennis at this point.

Honestly, I think there are some other sports that are far better than soccer that don't get the attention they deserve, but that is another issue.

The problem with soccer:

Penalize athletes who catch the defense off guard (offsides)
Too many players on the pitch at once (too few goals)
USA (men) suck

How can a sport be racist?

The problem with soccer:

Too many players on the pitch at once (too few goals)
USA (men) suck

a) Any person who criticizes the offside rule has only a rudimentary understanding of the sport.
b) You're entitled to this opinion.
c) There are probably only five teams in the world playing better than the USA men are right now.

you don't understand soccer if that is how you describe offsides. if it weren't for that rule, you'd have defenders hanging back and even fewer goals scored, among other points to be made here.

regarding scoring - soccer doesn't reward the offense when their drive stalls like football i.e. fieldgoals.

this game ended 5-1, or 35-7. you take away field goals in football, the scoring is a lot lower.

22 players on the field for soccer, 22 for football.

It was an exciting game. They played uptempo the entire time. Klinsman has the US rolling right now. Much much more fun to watch than they used to be. In the past they would have went into clock killing mode after scoring goal #2 or 3. Love how they kept attacking. This men's team could help out the sport of soccer in the US tremendously if they keep playing like this.

From the little i have seen from Corona, he seems to be playing very well. Any chance he can crack the A team? For those not in the know, this was the "B" team. Tune in to the games vs. Costa Rica and Mexico in September to catch the "A" team

Feel free to educate then.

Also, football has other things to keep a person entertained, i.e. a diving catch, 30 yard run, hard hit and as you mentioned the FG. Soccer, you'll some times see a guy break another dudes ankles, but other than scoring, there's not enough entertainment for those that aren't already into it.

Contrary to your initial post, offside is exactly what allows the offense to take the defense off guard. Without offside, the game would essentially consist of two groups: one cluster around one goal, one cluster around the other with the two groups punting the ball back and forth. Think women's six-on-six basketball. Defenses would just group around the goal, since they don't have any incentive to play high, and the ball would just bang around the penalty box and no one would be able to score. Offside is exactly what creates timed runs and the exciting break aways that funs love. The only thing that keeps what is called the "attacking third" wide open is the defenses' incentive to make a striker offsides.

Most people interepret offside as a rule that penalizes the offense, but defenses are every bit as responsible for manipulating the offside rule. If a defender allows a player to stay onside with a long ball sent through, the chances that player is going to score soars compared to if that defender can keep the attacker offside and keep a ball from ever being sent. This creates space, which makes the game so much more exciting and open to creativity in scoring.

Again, without offside, the game would be insufferable. It was before they instituted the rule...kind of like basketball before the shot clock.

I think you'll see Corona with the A team for 2018 Qualifiers and the 2018 World Cup, but the midfield is too saturated with talent for him to make the 2014 team.
