The game plan wasn't terribly different but the tendencies were a huge change. We haven't thrown that much on first down in the entire Ferentz era and an incomplete pass on first down didn't turn into two conservative runs and punt.
For some reason people just assume we run all the time on 1st down, but it isn’t necessarily the case this year. There is a poster that tracks this on Rivals and we have been pretty balanced on first downs run vs pass against most teams. Against OSU it was 16 rushes and 15 passes on first down plays, which has been about 50/50 run/pass all year long.
One tendency of ours though is to run on 2nd down after a 1st down incomplete pass. We do it all the time. Against OSU it was no different. To start the game we came out and passed and it was incomplete. Next down I told my buddies this is a guaranteed run, and sure enough it was. Wadley ripped off a 30 yard gain on that play. I’m sure OSU knew our tendency here as well, but it comes down to execution and we executed perfectly on that play.
