Upon rewatch

A few things came to mind after re-watching the OSU game.

  1. I don’t remember a game since I watched Iowa where you knew they needed to keep scoring throughout the game.
  2. The drives where Iowa punted were also where Iowa got behind the count so to speak on 1[SUP]st[/SUP] down. This happened often after picking up some yards and after picking up 1 or 2 first downs…then came up short on 1[SUP]st[/SUP] down…then They often threw incomplete or gained short on 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and could not pick up 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and long
  3. Saw a really nice flip the fullback..Rudock faked to him into the line, he then turned left and ran along behind the line out into the flat, rudock rolled out and flipped it to him for a really nice gain.
  4. Rudock threw some very accurate throws when he had time.
  5. A couple of times when he didn’t have time (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] half) a small blocking error made the difference (it is truly a game of inches).
  6. The TE’s got open in space, the WR’s could not
  7. ON Dusey’s 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] long reception – this one across the middle, CJF blocked 2 linebackers. ...at the same time.

I saw that too. Also noted on numerous plays the guy CJF was blocking was knocked to the ground. I don't remember him missing a block but TV coverage is pretty spotty for that kind of analysis. I also noticed that he was double covered on a lot of plays and so was Hamilton, who also seemed to be wrecking havoc at the second level.

When all three were in there was always one who was in single coverage. Watching the first half was like a Christmas morning and finding the present you wanted under the tree....<G>

Christmas Morning is right. Where has that team been? That is the team I have been waiting to see for the last year and a half.

What has been so disappointing is that we all KNEW that our TEs were that good. How could it take the coaching staff this long to take advantage of such a team strength?

At least we'll have that first half to look back on.

Even with losing cjf after this year, we are stacked at TE for the foreseeable future. Our TE's nfl success should keep em coming. If teams have to focus on our TE's it should take pressure off of other positions. We should go to them over and over until other teams have to double them. This could create lots of opportunities for our wide outs.
By the way, cjf has not been a terrific blocker in the past, but seems to really have turned a corner this year. Just in time for an nfl team to reap the benefits.

Also, I am not as down on our receiving core as some of you are. I think that next year they will be a strength for the hawks. Add our newly found TE game, and w e have the makings of a damn good offense next year.

I have to say, with Duzey and Hamilton coming along, I've been impressed with both blocking and catching. However, Kittle is really the surprise to me. I think this kid is a player too. He's a RS Freshman and he's getting some time with the depth we have...that should tell you something. He can freaking run too. I'm not sure anyone remembers this, but on KMM's first punt return, Kittle is seen at the end of the return just flying down the field in pursuit and catch up to KMM.

I thought he was a favor to his dad in getting him to Iowa...but I think he's a diamond in the rough. I know he only has a few catches...but he's big and fast and we all know he will be adding pounds and strength over the next two years. Yes, we are deep at TE and one of them could be deep threat against a DB, not just an LB.

Yes, kittle caught kmm on the return and kmm caught duzey vs osu. Wrap your head around that. Maybe kittle runs at Usain Bolt speed. What a true hidden gem. Just kidding. Nice post. He excites me too. Hope to see more 3 TE sets. Maybe with powell split wide.

speed isn't always so obvious - there are a lot of physics involved.

People keep mentioning how boggled they are that Ducey outran them or that KMM caught people.

Really doesn't mean much.

Ducey got the ball with his momentum moving forward - the one safety was back peddeling and off balance. KMM probably was on a dead sprint down the sideline and had all his momentum.

Those two OSU DB's likely are faster than both those Iowa players. It's like when Marv cook outran some OSU players for about 15 yards way back when.... Marv Cook was one of the slowest NFL TE's I can remember.

Just saying don't look too much at that play as some kind of speed litmus test.

This comment frames the criticisms of KFz as well as anything. It takes so ******* long for him (and his staff) to recognize what seems obvious...and then do it...make the adjustment...play the other player...shift your strategy...etc, etc.

Stubborn...is not strong. It's a lot closer to stupid.

Leveraging the TEs as we did, had me jumping off the couch with "YES! Where the hell has this been?"

Exactly. This has been a major problem for me fpr several years. Not to mention they also threw a jump ball to the 6'7 tight end in the back of the endzone. This should have been done 50 times with CJF, but it hasnt been done at all in CJF's career. Which is mind boggling to me. A blatantly obvious mismatch for three years and never exploited. Very exciting to see last week, but also disappointing.

I hate to rain on everyone's parade here, but we've used a ton of two and yes sometimes three tight ends at the same time this year. Now, they were mostly run domimate play selection...I will agree. What we say Saturday was a thing of beauty in the first half...just couldn't have been executed any better against a good defense. I'm honestly pretty happy with the way GD has performed as an OC this year. We've made tremendous progress year over year. That being said, I wish he'd go back to plays that have been effective early in the game. To me, he's always setting up for the next sequence and there are times when you have to show teams things two or even three times if they can't effectively stop it. It will only make the next sequence of the same formation all that more effective. Example, the pass to Kittle in the second half...they had no clue how to defend that. Go back to it GD.
