Iowa is up to 22nd.

This is the official RPI that is used by the NCAA. It is only updated once per week.

I find it interesting that Northwestern is ranked 85, that is within striking distance of NCAA consideration. Purdue is the only B1G ranked outside the top 100 (#111).

Purdue is at 111 and has a lot of work to do. However, every B1G team has a winning record and has a path to an at large bid available to them as of today IMO. Of course all 12 teams won't make it but going 8-1 in the 2nd half probably gets any of the 12 teams an at large bid. Do you agree Kelley?

Iowa technically dropped to 22 from 21, not "up to" 22, but I'm not complaining about that RPI.

OK by me if WU and OSU are still highly ranked - that'll mean two more Top-25 RPI wins when we mop the floor with them in Carver. Same goes for Michigan.

There is plenty of basketball left to be played so anything can happen. In another thread I called Illinois a bubble team, a big reason for that is because of their RPI (#69) and if they beat Wisconsin at home tomorrow (another struggling team) they would be right back into the conversation. Think back to this day last year Illinois had the exact same conference record (2-7) and everybody was writing them off for the tournament. They go on a 5 game winning streak and end up in the NCAA tournament. A team like Purdue would need a lot of work but Nebraska, Indiana, and even Northwestern still can get in the conversation.

So yeah, I agree.

Thanks for the correction, I still have the sites that update the RPI daily and has Iowa in the 30s on my mind.

I guess I just wonder how logical/accurate the RPI rankings can be when both WUs & O$U lost at least 3 or 4 games in a row and 4out of 5, when Iowa it 6-3 and just won on the road after losing in OT to MSU, but is still behind them and dropped 1 spot. It doesn't seem logical.

Big Ten is either very top heavy with Iowa, MSU and Michigan being the only decent teams or is the best top to bottom conference in the country. Everyone below 3rd place is taking each other out and the bad teams seem to be getting better. I honestly don't know which one at this point.

Iowa has one of the worst non conference schedules in D1. The RPI is all about numbers, it does not measure head to head or "logic". Fifty percent of the RPI score is your opponents won/loss percentage, 25% is your opponents opponents record, and 25% is your own win percentage. If you win on the road it credits teams 1.4 win and a home win counts .6 win while losses count 1.4 at home and .6 on the road.

And I think we still have plenty of opportunity to increase our rpi right?

Yes, while Iowa has one of the worst non conference schedules they have one of the toughest conference schedules. Since every team Iowa plays in conference has a winning record every game gives the opponent win percentage a boost. But as the season progresses nothing moves the RPI score more than winning since at the end of the season your own win percentage is a smaller number to move than your opponents win percentage which becomes a large number.

This is where I like ESPN's RPI rankings. Even though it is wrong (I think they include the win against Abilene Christian) the site breaks out the different categories.

The RPI is a stupid rating system. It doesn't measure the best teams and it's dumb that the NCAA uses it. But they do so it's important to follow.

The RPI will be completely obsolete within 5 years. It's ridiculous that its taken this long actually.

It's really stupid that the NCAA committee is made of heads of institutions that do research and they select teams based off a terrible analytic tool.

It's almost like they've already accepted the fact that its stupid but they still use it anyway.

Yep. This was really hashed over on HN last season when the Hawks were a bubble team and Belmont was a sure thing at-large. It is a flawed system but it does give some indication of a team's strength. It should just not be the primary factor in selection or seeding.

And this season: while Wichita State has some nice wins they would not be close to a 1-3 seed if they played in a big boy conference.

Iowa is battling ISU, Duke, Wisky, Mich, Texas, C-ton, OKST, Nova for a 3 seed this year. Iowa has lost to four of those. Need a split against Wis, Mich. Texas and OKST won't keep up their pace.
