~Update on Moss & Hutton~

Good to read that the Purdue and Michigan games are sell outs already (not counting standing room only).

I was excited about Hutton and Moss when we recruited them so it's definitely good to read that they appear to be cool with redshirting and learning. Obviously it helped Baer!

It was nice to get an update on the two red shirts. I think there's a lot of talent on next year's roster which is why I don't expect the drop off many others are expecting. We lose a lot of experience but there are still talented players waiting their turn.

Young talent needs time to mature, grow and learn. Marble needed time, White needed time, Uthoff needed time. I don't expect too much next year, as we will be just too young at too many spots. The nice thing is I think the drop offs will be short lived as the talent will be there in Moss, Hutton, Cook, Baer, Williams, etc. Compliment them with new incoming talent each year in Conner, Weiscamp, then Patrick, and I think the train keeps on running smoothly for years to come.

I agree. But Jones, Jok, Uhl and Baer will all be at least 3 years removed from high school. And all 4 will be very difficult match ups. It's not like we will be throwing 8 true freshmen out there.

I didn't expect a big drop off next year a few weeks ago. Now my expectations on this year has gone up which makes me assume the drop off will be bigger.

And we aren't throwing out 3 Sr. players who have tons of experience either. Jones has what 8 games of non conference D1 experience, Baer will have 1 year experience, and Uhl two years, and Jok 3 years. That is the extent of our experience, and I think it is going to hurt us more than you think, just like it has help us more than many thought this year.

I agree 100% with what you're saying as it relates to experience. My posts going clear back to when Gesell and Clemmons were freshmen speculated about how great it would be when they were our starting back court as seniors...3 years of playing full time can't be replicated in practice, etc. There's on court chemistry, knowing how to handle hostile crowds, knowing how to overcome the style of play officials allow game to game, etc.

I believe the roster depth, overall talent, etc. next season will help offset some of that lost experience. Experience is invaluable. But talent can help make up for lack of experience.

I'm not trying to be a jerk...enjoying this discussion. What are your expectations for next year right now? I'm thinking 11-7 in the conference and finishing around 6th place, an NCAA berth and a team that's playing better in March than in December. This is a step back from what I see this year's team doing. But I don't consider it to be rebuilding if we are in the NCAA's with a lot of upside.

Overall athleticism should be very good next year. Point guard play, as mentioned in other threads could be an issue. Mainly because it is such a tough position to play as a Freshmen unless you are a stud. We'll see what happens, but I'd be happy with a solid NIT run and ecstatic with an NCAA berth, but its a long ways off so will worry about it later.

Wisconsin lost a ton of talent from last year and they aren't doing very good this year. I think Iowa is going to do fine next year, but they definitely won't be as experienced as this years squad. They should be more versatile and deeper next year with hopefully solid three point shooting. I think Fran knows how to coach them up next year. They should be a fun team to watch. Personally, I think they should be pretty solid defensively and offensively next year. They might be a little weaker that the center position defensively. Experience takes time to acquire, but they won't be totally lacking in player experience.

Uhl and Baer's recent play provides some optimism for next year.

With that said, it's going to take more than an article in a paper talking about a some college kids practicing to convince me that there won't be a big step backwards in replacing 4 senior starters, one of which who has firmly put his name in the hat for Big 10 player of the year with his play.

Two years ago many on here said all was lost because Marble was our play maker that could create his own shot and wouldn't be back. There was no one on the roster or coming in that could make up for those 17 points per game from Marble. He was 1st Team All Conference and Iowa doesn't routinely have players of that caliber. We don't reload. We rebuild.

Last year all was lost because we were losing White who was 1st Team All Conference and Olaseni...the 6th Man of the Year. Who will be the leader? Uthoff isn't a leader and looks lethargic our there. What are we going to do in the post? Woodbury will foul out every game...be lucky if he's on the floor 20 minutes a game. After Woodbury there's nobody in the post. Jok still can't play defense or be counted on to be a consistent scorer.

This year we will likely lose another 1st Team All Conference player...for the 3rd year in a row. We're losing tons of experience and 4 senior starters. There's no true center. There's no experience in the back court. Next year's team will be fun to watch and see grow but it will be a rebuilding year.

It's college basketball. Guys can only play 4 years. A good coach will have good players and lose valuable guys every year. And a good coach will have guys ready to step in, play more minutes, have expanded roles, etc. And Fran is a good coach IMO.

The loss of experience will hurt. But other guys are going to play those 109 minutes per game the seniors are playing. They will take all of those shots. And I think there's enough talent to play in the NCAA Tournament. We'll know for sure in 14 months.

I always felt the year we lost Marble we would replace him, I thought when we lost White, we had 4 Sr. starters that would replace him and Gabe as well. Next year, I just think we will be a year away. I hope you are right, I hope those young guys progress fast and keep us on the NCAA track. I don't expect it, but will super excited if they do it!

If we continue being good this year and make the tourney next year do we start to consider Fran an all time great iowa coach or is it too early for that. 4 tournament births in a row (yeah, play in i know) and 3 straight seasons of overachieving would be pretty solid. Or maybe I've just been soured by how boring alford was and how terrible lick was.

As far as the article goes I wish we could have heard something from the two guys actually redshirting. Maybe there is a rule against them talking to the media.

Imo I still think one of them will transfer, just a gut feeling no real logic behind it. One positive however is both guys get pretty fired up on the end of the bench during games and look like they are having a good time.

The main difference is we are talking about 4 starters... 2 who have been for 4 years and plus Uthoff.

I should have said this in my original post but I'm excited about Moss & Hutton but I just don't think they will be plug and play guys with no drop off as we look to next year.

With that said, when these guys are juniors and we have a Baer as a senior and some of the younger talent coming in... We might have a more overall talented roster than this year and be back to having a ton of experience if these guys develop like I would imagine and how we have seen Fran improve guys like Marble, White and now Uthoff so he has the track record.

Good things to come but will take our lumps next year.

Why would they transfer? They're 10 months away from playing meaningful minutes for a B1G team. The closer they get to next season, the more they're going to be glad they red-shirted this season.

I agree, an NCAA berth isn't completely out of the question but I am just tempering my expectations. It isn't that I don't believe in Fran or the team but just from the outside trying to be realistic, gotta be willing to let kids grow a little. I think this future team will be VERY good, if they are a year ahead of schedule it would be awesome. Not sure how the BIG TEN will be next year either, that wll be a big part of if we make the tourney. No matter what I think the future looks pretty bright. We have Cook and Conner McCaffrey coming in the next 2 years. If we can add one more high tier player with Conner's class it could be special.

Exactly. During my lifetime, I just can't recall an Iowa team losing that many starters without it being rough the following year.

I'd love to be wrong, but I think some of you are in for a rude awakening next year. It doesn't mean they won't get back on track the next year, etc. though. I just expect a rebuilding year in 2016-17.
