Unofficial World Cup/US Nats Victory Thread

Almost here, folks. I personally can't wait. This one could be special if we beat Ghana.

Cue the weird soccer trolling in 5, 4, 3....

So the day Klinsmann says in an interview that we won't win the Cup, we start a World Cup Victory thread?

Unless I'm mistaken those comments were made in December. I don't know much about Klinsmann but the more I hear from him, the more respect I gain. In a world where 90% of the coaches and players basically retread the same useless PC comments, Klinsmann tells it how he sees it.

He reminds me of Herb Brooks a bit. He's not afraid to speak the truth. All he cares about is putting together the best team and refuses to care what an individual star player may think or feel. I like Kobe Bryant but his comments regarding him were spot on.

One can experience victory without winning an entire tournament. We aren't going to win the World Cup. Anyone who thinks we will is a moron. It doesn't mean that we can't have a successful cup.

You're a Hawk fan, right? You post here, right? Do you think national championships are imminent?

I agree with the sentiment that the US won't win the Cup, but US fans have to be cautiously optimistic about getting out of group stage in light of Ronaldo's injury. If he's unable to be 100%, America's odds are much, much better.

Im with ya, Grape. Let's get it started. Hoping all the Americans in Brazil do well. That includes the refs.

Just a heads up that Mexico and Portugal play a friendly tomorrow night. Even though its a friendly might be a good opportunity to watch Portugal before the World Cup starts. Might just be enough to make us feel better about our chances.

Thanks fellas. I should have just looked it up myself but I was being lazy. Figured someone would know it off the top of their head.

USA looking solid vs. Nigeria. Good to see Jozy Altidore is getting things straitened out at the right time.

First of all, what's with all these young upstart threads (tweeterhawk, I'm looking at you). This is THE unofficial World Cup thread. It just so happens to coincide with US domination.

Second, here are some thoughts on what we've seen so far:

Brazil? Not impressed. They have a lot of work to do. Croatia was game, but they shouldn't have been able to frustrate Brazil as much as they did.

Mexico looked good against a decent Cameroon side. I thought they wouldn't show nearly as much confidence as they did. And I hate Mexico.

Netherlands? What can you say? What a confidence booster for them.

Spain? What can you say? What a confidence destroyer for them.

The Chile match was predictable, the first true mismatch of the Cup.

Great start. Today is going to be off the chain with England/Italy. I don't think the Normans have a chance.

Funny.

Are the Normans still more French or have they been Anglo-sized?

Who on gods earth had ever used the word Normans to describe the English soccer team?

It was a joke. In the same way that I might describe you as a 'goblin' instead of a 'troll' because it has a bit more je ne sais quoi. Is it accurate? No. Are you the worst? Yes.
