Unlikely Iowa gets into the NCAA Tournament

Do you all really think Butler is that much better than Iowa???? They beat UNC handily, I think we will too, my prediction is 21 snd 10 this year!!

I can see 21 and 10 or 20 and 10. Beating UNC at their house will be a severe test. They will be really up for the game because of Woody. I would love to see him have a great game....

I also think we beat number two Wisconsin at Carver and play then well enough to perhaps win in Madison.....

1. The Hawks will make the NCAA tournament
2. They will win 2 games in said tournament
3. Fran is not a POS as a coach or as a human being
4. The right way is the best way... win or lose.
5. Ya'll have no idea if our coaches play nice on the recruiting trail
6. Fran isn't going anywhere unless he chooses to leave for something like Notre Dame

Well put, BlindDog, agree with almost all. I can see us winning one game for certain in the tournament, of course, it depends on the opponent. I anticipate us playiing our best ball near the end of conference season, same as we have since Fran's first year, beating #4 Purdue at Carver his last regular season game with Caesar sitting behind the bench. I also remember his second and third years, Iowa was the team nobody wanted to play as the conference season neared the end. Last season's end was certainly not the norm and will not happen again. Guaranteed.....

I've been pretty optimistic thinking every game that we might turn it around shooting wise. Then every game I watch wide open shots miss over and over and over. With Jok and TD I can hold out hope that they are not comfortable yet. It's too late for that to be an excuse for other guys.

I just can't blame Fran when every other aspect of our game is pretty darn good except knocking down wide open shots.

I wonder if we should spread the floor in the half court and set screens for the suppossed snipers.....

I have no worries about Jaryd. The game against Pepperdine, he drew a lot of defensive attention, leaving others open and they picked up the slack.....

Smart way to play. He is finally opening up his game and I am certain he has a license to shoot. Last season he was hitting near 50% of his threes along with Josh. This was over halfway through the conference season. They were just very reluctant to shoot, deferring to Devyn....

Hope the Hawks get in but I am not scheduling 10 days off like I did last year. I said no thanks to Dayton and went to SA to watch the Clones and Creighton.

Right now this team ins't an NCAA team. The good thing is the season is just beginning and there is plenty of room for improvement. For instance who would think that a 11-10 (3-6 in conference) would make the NCAA's? Welp that is what Nebraska did. Conversely who would have thought the #10 team in the country with a 19-6 (8-4 B1G record) would have to play a first round game?

Lots can happen, it is a long season.

Not good so far, but Marble was such a big part of the scoring last year we've got to figure out what we are. I'm not optimistic or pessimistic yet, just observing and hoping for the best. Last year we would have been fine, but something happened in the locker room the last month. I don't know what but something happened and that team just quit. Hoping whoever the problem was is gone.

We have a couple of new players and if everyone can figure out their role and how to play together we have the talent to be very good. Have to wait and see.

Iowa's SoS is going to be so good this year that they should be in good shape as long as they can avoid bad losses. In the non-conference schedule Iowa will play 4 or 5 NCAA tourney teams (Syracuse, Texas, NC, ISU, UNI). In the B1G conference, they should play at least 8 games against NCAA tournament teams and potentially up to 11 games against NCAA tourney teams.

Iowa is going to have plenty of opportunities this season. I'm not sure why people are freaking out already...Iowa has basically played one bad half of basketball so far this year, which was the second half against Texas. Sure they haven't looked great at times against some of the weaker opponents, but they are still learning and its still really early.

There you have it.....

I'd be concerned if Iowa, after 6 games for heavens sake, was hitting on all cylinders this early. They or any other team would have no where to go but down. Basketball is a long distance run. Don't run an all out sprint from the get go. Pace yourself.

Yes, Gesell and Olgesby need to start hitting more shots when they're open as does Jok and Dickerson. But it's early and they frankly have no where to go but up at this point. Something will start falling for a few of these guys.

Of course Olgesby is the one who concerns me the most. He apparently hits most everything in practice and has struggled in most games during his career. Some guys shoot well at 5:00 PM but can't hit much at 7:00 PM. In other words, looks great in warmups but not in games.

I hate to blame Fran too much for this because he actually put together a pretty good team with what he's had to work from. There is no way you can blame him for bringing in Gesell and Oglesby and there's jo way anyone could have predicted how horrible of shooters they would be. You just can't have you're point guard and your 3 pt specialist mis wide open 3 after wide open 3.

The only thing Fran could have done better is have better backups in place to take over the starting spots. We were one of the worst power 5 teams in the nation when he came in so I'm going to give him some slack that he hasn't built enough depth to overcome 2 top 150 recruits under performing so badly. If those 2 guys could make open shots, we might be undefeted right now. Probably would have stull lost to Texas but we would have opened some eyes doing it.

So I didn't get to see the game Saturday but I listened to some on the radio and Ellingson hit a couple 3s in mop up time.

is there any chance he can contribute this year??

Confidence is a major issue for this team right now and its causing scoring droughts that make it increasingly difficult to win games. Need to find 1 or 2 guys *cough* White and Uthoff *cough* that can carry us through dry spells. It’s amazing what a difference seeing the ball go through the hoop can do for this team.

I would say not a tourney team but we will be on the bubble.

As we all are... Just speculating and hope I'm wrong.

I just see the guard play being too much to overcome and will lose too many conference games plus UNC and split the ISU/UNI games would be best case scenario.

If your guards can't put it in the hole you are going to have trouble. Iowa will be lucky to make the NCCA tourney this year. I'm guessing a high seed in the NIT. But, they have a lot of game to get better and prove themselves.

Fran said he is still hurting and there is a chance they will shut him down for a medical hardship.

I just re-watched the Longwood game, and I like this team. The inside guys are very effective at scoring. The guards played good shut down defense. Ogelsby shat the ball well. The overall team defense was great. Holding the opponent to under 50 will win most games.

I know it's a typo, but I couldn't help laughing at this as it is typed....

I was at the game saturday. What with about 8 minutes left we had Ellingson and Ogelsby in at the same time and they made 3 threes. It was great to see the Longwood zone have to be accountable for more than one shooting threat. Really opened things up. Flashes like this give me hope that we will continue to develop. It's a long season and Iowa's schedule is tough. I don't understand the doom and gloom from some after 7 games. For the first time in the Fran era his team will be tested in the non conference. I think this pays off late in the year when trying to make a run for the tourney. Going to be a fun year with alot of great match ups. Too many ranked teams on the schedule to count this team out in December.

Only took 2 shots but his release was cleaner and quicker than Oglesby. But the competition was so bad (Longwood reserves) that it's pretty hard to tell. Based on lack of experience and not an exceptional athlete, I don't think he would make a difference this year. I do think the future has some good potential though.
