What about something similar in design to what the Fab 5 wore at Michigan.. Obviously it would say "Iowa" and be gold and black instead. Maybe put a tigerhawk on the leg in place of the "M". You get the idea. The shorts don't have to be as long, of course.
Simple and effective without a lot of fluff. I sometimes think people tend to get too cute with the design and you end up with something that just looks tacky. Keep it simple. Simple doesn't make it "plain" IMO.

Too much like Michigan State. I like the silver outline in one of those though.
