Underwhelming game outside of the first 2 scores

Looked like the same ole Brian offensive mess. Defense was decent, but not uber dominant.

I guess they did score 24 points without the defense scoring for them...so there is that. But, still under that 25 point mark.

We will see how much improvement from Game 1 to 2.

Middle of the OL is really bad, I don’t see how practicing improves that. WRs couldn’t shake off a post it note in a hurricane and Cade is a hit away from hospice.

I’ll give Phil credit as far as defense and say he pulled an Uncle Miltie and pulled out just enough to win.
LMAO! Ok this made me laugh “ WRs couldn’t shake off a post it note in a hurricane”

So Iowa football is entirely dependent on Cade being healthy enough to start games. If he was practicing the last two weeks I think the offense would have been actually good. Pass blocking was OK, run blocking not so good. Our backs fall down a lot after the first hit. D was OK lots or near T/O's think they will come. That QB was really good for Utah State. Bet he's one of the best we play this year. Utah team could win some games in the Big. Not disappointed in the game just apprehensive about Cade. Lots of good and bad in this game. Several drops that cost scores and a missed block here and there. Brian called some good plays but he really got predictable after the first quarter. Someone tell Brian, predictable is bad for an offense.

It's kinda like the offense has flow when the plays can be scripted. The rest of the game not so much.

There were many predictions that our OL would be much better.

When will this be happening?

Is it just me or has it really regressed since that whole Chris Doyle fiasco and after he left. I'm not throwing any of our coaches under the bus, but just pointing out the coincidence. Maybe I'm wrong but just seems we haven't been the same since that.

0 sacks.
Haven't rewatched, but McNamara never got lit up within nanoseconds of the snap.
Couple times, he had all the time in the world.
Couple times he got hurried.
Several times he got rid of the ball or even completed a pass to an outlet with soneone coming. Some of that is he isn't Petras. But pass blocking is a vast improvement.

2.4 yards per carry? Either the o-line is horrible. Like D3 caliber, or an offensive that is poorly coordinated. Probably a little both. There's just no way the O-line is 2.4 ypc bad. 3.something maybe. But not 2.4

If that doesn't change...dunno. Unless they turn Cade/etc. loose on every play.

The pass blocking was good, the interior run blocking was so bad I tend to think it was missing assignments.

I was there in person. It's that bad. They weren't missing assignments as much as just not having the strength or push to move anybody -- even tho they were bigger and taller than Utah St's DLine across the board.
It actually is somewhat bizarre.

Most times where we have shown what looks like offensive power is when we have far superior talent than the opponent. That only seems to happen when we are playing the bottom half teams of major conferences or we are playing against teams from what is considered lower rated football divisions. Even then the upper tier in some of the other lower divisions give us problems.

I used to roll my eyes over the years when some would come on the sports forums and state the game has passed Kirk by. I think there is some truth to this in that he is hindered into a conservative mindset offensively. Like what some of the sports commentators were saying after the games when reviewing who won and who lost. “New QB, good tight ends, but same plays!” Kirk has not departed from what he has done all these years regardless of the talent pool he has to work with.

It’s been successful as far as achieving a respectable win loss record. However it has limitations that will never allow him to achieve true greatness as in winning a Big Ten title let alone getting to the playoff series. Close one time like in 2015 but close only counts in certain games like horseshoes or darts. In football it ends in losses when all the marbles are on the line. We just can never put the right pieces together to get over the hump. Twenty-five years is a long enough proving ground for this.

Why is it tolerated? One only needs to look West at the Nebraska program and shudder to think this could happen to Iowa. We are competitive to an acceptable point by most Iowa fans. Never reaching the pinnacle of winning conferences titles or getting into the playoffs but competitive enough to give false hopes of some fans to ever get to the top of the mountain.

Wrigley Field is a beautiful park and setting for baseball on a warm summer day or evening. Sitting with your family, having a hotdog and soda and just being there and enjoying the moment together. It’s a beautiful thing. Kinnick offers the same types of experiences and throw in the end of the first quarter wave to the kids in the hospital and you have an awesome experience. Plus we do a good job of winning most games there. That’s all good from that perspective. So enjoy those types of experiences when ever you can have them. Conference championship? Playoff births? Doesn’t seem to be in the cards for Iowa Hawkeye football fans. One key injury to someone like Cade and you looking at a 7-5 team at best even with the weaker schedule this year. It is what it is.

And this was Utah St. What the hell they going to do in the BIG??

Ferentz’ coaching the offensive line would be a big advantage, but they aren’t coaching the offensive line! One is the head coach so he isn’t coaching any units. And Brian, a former center, is coaching qb’s. Why? Because his dad wants him to be his successor so Iowa suffers as a result. This has been a glaring irony since the day he was put in this position. And continues to this day. And I’ve never understood how so many give them a pass for this incredibly obvious strategy. It only benefits brian although has hurt his stock in the end. It’s hurt kirk’s legacy and he’ll have to live with that. We shouldn’t have had to
