Ulis's replacement

High school highlights. They are a few years old, but it's better than nothing.

Seems like more of an Ingram replacement than a Ulis replacement. I imagine Fran will look for a juco and 3 HS players in this class.

There is no replacement, PG is not a serious need, but having the opportunity to get Ulis was huge. From a roster standpoint did Iowa have to have Ulis, no, but from a talent standpoint, yes.
If Iowa doesn't get a PG for this class, it is okay. Focus on getting more athletic wings and maybe a big guy.
Tory Miller, Josh Cunningham and Jackson Forbes would be a nice fit for that.

Not a fan of chasing pipe dreams. When I see the fall backs I just have to think the Hawks lost out on going after better players while they were chasing Ulis and Co. At this point I might let the class dissolve and start looking at late options or bank the schollies for JUCOs next year.

Unless this guy just got way better and way more explosive, he is NOT a B1G player and it sure doesn't look like the other fall back is one either.

As some have said, PG is not a necessity in this class..and they had a shot at a great one.

Not a fan of chasing pipe dreams. If you think landing Ulis was a pipe dream then you must have just started paying attention to this story 2 days ago. Iowa had as good of a shot as anybody throughout the whole process and I would say Fran was leading for much of it.

When I see the fall backs I just have to think the Hawks lost out on going after better players while they were chasing Ulis and Co. With Gesell and Clemmons on the roster for 3 more years, PG doesnt become a major need in recruiting until the 2015 or 2016 class.

At this point I might let the class dissolve and start looking at late options or bank the schollies for JUCOs next year. Let the class dissolve and bank schollies? What the hell does this mean? You want to bank 3 or 4 schollies for the next year so Fran has 7 to give to the class of 2015? These 3 plus Stokes, White, Oglesby and Gabe's scholly?

Unless this guy just got way better and way more explosive, he is NOT a B1G player and it sure doesn't look like the other fall back is one either.

I think this is more evidence that Fran likes Gesell playing off the ball. That's the only reason to explain going after a juco pg in this class.

He's not explosive enough to be a B1G player, but he's good enough to school Tyus Jones and earn a full ride to play for Kentucky?

Give me a break.

Do you really think this? Before the summer eval period, it was Iowa on the kid, and Michigan St. trying to catch up. If Kentucky didn't offer (and a lot of things had to happen for them to offer) Iowa probably gets him. There was no way whatsoever that Fran probably thought that Ulis was a kid that Kentucky was gonna be going after.

Heck before the Michigan St. offer and then the Kentucky offer, many on here felt Ulis wasn't even worth an offer.....

The bolded is correct...big time. Damn you Larry Brown.

A PG isn't a need in this class, but the only way bringing in a JUCO PG makes any sense is if they plan on redshirting him or having MG play most of his minutes off the ball. If they are truly pursuing him strongly, then my money is on him being a redshirt candidate next year. We also will for sure be bringing in a PG with the 2015 class and wouldn't be surprised to see a redshirt put on whoever that is depending of course on the talent level. Redshirting a JUCO PG and then bringing in a 2015 PG would result in the PG position being broken up a little better.

2014-2015:
Jr. - MG
Jr. - Clemmons
Jr. - Alston (Redshirt)

2015-2016:
Sr. - MG
Sr. - Clemmons
RS Jr. - Alston
Freshman PG (Possible Redshirt)

2016-2017:
Sr. - Alston
RS Fr. or So. PG
Probably another Freshman PG

Ding ding ding! A mid level juco pg is not the type of player you redshirt.

I think this is more evidence that Fran likes Gesell playing off the ball. That's the only reason to explain going after a juco pg in this class.

We need to be careful about surmising that Fran deems someone not capable of doing something just because he is recruiting another player at a position. It's called building the best roster possible. Fran wants to get as many good players as possible. Gesell is a good player. Fully capable of playing the point, but his ability to get by people and into the lane isn't as good as guys like Ulis. Beauty of a guy like Gesell is he can be effective running the point or playing off the ball. The more versatility and options a team has, the better. If you can put multiple people on the floor who can dribble and shoot, it makes you that much harder to defend.

I agree with what you're saying but I really don't like Mike off the ball. I think Mike's best fit is as a PG who you have to respect as a spot up shooter. He can be a distributor but he can score so well that it makes him extremely dangerous. I think his game is limited as an off guard and I think the matchup is more dificult for him to go against a taller defender and lacks the burst to blow by a taller defender.

This is just my opinion and I like Mike as a palyer and think he could be a great PG. I just think there is a big difference between the 2 positions and it can make a big difference.... just ask Marble or Jake Kelly.

I like Mike off the ball just fine. Will end up being one of the best outside shooters on the team, both mid range and 3 pointers most likely.

You need to learn to read. I was talking about the person the thread is about, not Ulis. I also don't think point was important enough to put so many eggs in the Ulis basket.

In fact, I was one of the early guys saying I thought all the Ulis focus was silly considering Iowa didn't really need another small guard and if Ulis played, by year two it meant MG was coming off the bench. Yep, Jok is going to be a better option at 2 than MG next year.

I just don 't like the looks of the last two offers. I would have preferred putting the full court press on a couple of athletic forwards who were in more of the three star category than chasing kids like Ulis.

And for those of you that think Fran had a REAL chance, you need to not be so selective with your media.

Why would you think the Jok would put MG on the bench in year 2? Wouldn't White be gone and Uthoff could slide to the PF spot, but also Woodbury would still be there. Smaller lineups with good guards can work in college.
