Tyler Wiegers Headed to Eastern Michigan

We will never know what he could have done. Was supposedly neck and neck with Stanley up until the week before the first game, then Stanley played virtually every single snap of the season, including blowouts. It's kind of a shame that the Ferentz system is all or nothing. Just ask Bo Bower's backup.

The dominos are starting to fall... Opens up a scholly. Wish him luck seems like a good kid. Does Boyle go too or does he stay thinking he's one snap away from being the man?

Not surprising and wish him well. He was in a tough spot and seemed to just keep his head down and do what was best for the team.

I always assumed Iowa would design some plays for a mobile QB and then use Boyle on occasion to throw off our opponent. It would seem a better use of his talent than sitting behind a skill position player.

Not just a shame, it's downright terrifying. I'll never forget how bad the offense looked against Northwestern in 2009 when JVB came in, then we found out the backup doesn't even get a handful of plays with the first team. My guess is it's a result of the practice restrictions and desire to get the #1 ready, but man oh man, that system is downright hazardous to your health when you have to watch a backup come in during a clutch situation.

Part of it is the ball control offense that results in low scoring games. There rarely is enough of a lead to put in the backup QB. I'm not saying Iowa should go away from ball control offense, but low scoring games that leave lesser teams within striking distance has been a feature.

True. But even when we are blowing other teams away, if the backup enters the game his main job is to hand off to a RB who plows into the line with the goal of not scoring. It might be advisable to allow the backup to . . . you know . . . throw the ball. I think our punter had the same number of pass attempts as TW.

In 2016 there were wins by 39, 28, and 30 points, plus a big lead against Purdue. Plus 2 losses by 27. So that's 5 or 6 games a backup qb could have played in, even if he only got mop-up / after the game's decided minutes. Stanley attempted 9 passes for the year.

2017 wins by 29, 31, & 42. A loss by 24. 4 potential mop-up games. A whopping 2 pass attempts for the backup qb.

I agree on 2016. You have a senior starting QB. Either get your backup QB some time or redshirt him.

2017 is a bit different, considering it is Stanley first year as a starter. The more work you get your starter the better.

You give 10 passing plays to a backup and that affects Stanley? Seems like a reach.

Wiegers is a smart kid and a great game manager I've heard. I wouldn't be surprised if he's on an NFL roster at some point. ;)

Don’t know anything about Eastern Mick football but Sokol and Ruddock did fine after transferring.

If Weigers was really competing with Stanley for the starting position and based on Stanley’s success this year along with the 2 other transfers success, I would say Eastern Mich has a lot to be excited about.
