Tyler Nielsen is on the Lott trophy watch list.

He is, but team success often puts guys on the radar. Knott will have his day in the sunshine this year.

BTW, how many tackles, TFL's, and Int's did Nielsen have last year?

Just because you have a lot of tackles doesn't mean your a great linebacker it means you have a ****** defensive line.

Iowa LBs will most likely never pile up a ton of TFLs. It's part of playing in Iowa's system. Nielsen had an interception or 2 before he got hurt. Did you watch the Iowa vs ISU game? He had a pretty spectaular diving interception showing plenty of athleticism. He was tough against the run and money in Iowa's zone coverage. He he broke a vertebrae against Michigan and proceeded to play the entire Wisconsin game an half of the MSU game before he went out and found out about playing with a broken vertebrae for nearly two games. I've never seen that type of toughness from Knotts. Nielsen has started for just over half a season and is being recognized as a very good linebacker.

Iowa LB's are getting up there in next level success almost as much as Iowa TE's or OL.

This is true I mean if you were taking the shortcut. You could just look and say does Iowa have any seniors at those three spots and throw them all watch list.

Honestly, I think that is what they did. :)

I think Nielsen can do great things, but I think they looked at it and had to list someone from the hawkeyes so they picked the experienced LB.

If he stays healthy he could have a great year and get drafted.

Bottom line, I am pumped about this coming season. Yeah, we are under the radar. But that's when I love my Hawks the most. I love watching these young guys develop and then making their way into studs on the field. Lowery, Morris, etc.... Nielsen is legit and this is very deserving.

And how many of Knott's INTs were a result of him taking very good pass drops and then reacting well to tip-drill balls? It's not like all of Knott's picks were the result of him taking great breaks on the ball as he's running with TEs/RBs/WRs. I watched enough ISU games to know that that simply was not the case.

Also, it's simply foolish to compare Knott's tackle production to Nielsen's. Nielsen played a role position for Iowa ... a spot that, on average doesn't equate to impressive production. However, all the same, Nielsen's production actually was surprisingly good for an Iowa LEO LB ... particularly given that he played in only 8 games ... and a few of those he was really dinged up.

Here's a little bit of reference for ya:

'03 Iowa LEO LB: Grant Steen (set the pre-Edds gold standard at the LEO spot)
In 12 games: 58 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 1 INT, 4 pass break-ups

'04 Iowa LEO LB: George Lewis (more of an ILB, but played on a great '04 Iowa D)
In 12 games: 43 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 INT

'05 Iowa LEO LB: Edmund Miles (more of an ILB, blitzed a good bit due to young DL)
In 12 games: 68 tackles, 9 TFLS, 1 sack, 1 INT

'06 Iowa LEO LB: Mike Humpal (more of an ILB, very good in coverage, but injured in '06)
In 12 games: 49 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 3 INTs, 3 pass break-ups

'07 Iowa LEO LB: AJ Edds (THE GOLD STANDARD)
In 12 games: 80 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, 1 INT, 4 pass break-ups

'08 Iowa LEO LB: AJ Edds (THE GOLD STANDARD)
In 13 games: 59 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 4 pass break-ups

'09 Iowa LEO LB: AJ Edds (THE GOLD STANDARD)
In 13 games: 78 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 0.5 sacks, 5 INTs, 4 pass break-ups

'10 Iowa LEO LB: Tyler Nielsen
In 8 games: 42 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 1 INT, 4 pass break-ups

If Nielsen were able to remain healthy and maintain that level of production through Iowa's 13 games in 2010, Iowa would not only have won more games, but his hypothetical production would have looked like:
68 tackles, 7 TFLs, 1 or 2 INTs, 7 pass break-ups
Needless to say, such production would have been comparable to that put up by the very best LEO LBs to have played at Iowa.

Excellent athlete. Speed to burn as he won the 3A 400 meter at state in 48-something (and anchored 4 x 400) while weighing 225 lbs. Pretty amazing. I'll be surprised if he's not 1st team all-league this year.

Completely agree. that's why you don't see guys from Vanderbilt, ASU, Duke
and Purdue on the list.
