Option 1) We are petrified of Northwestern's offense. Let's control the clock and keep them off the field and limit their possessions.

Option 2) We like our offense against their defense as much as we dislike theiroffense against our defense. Let's try to outscore them.

I firmly believe that option 1 ends with a loss and option 2 ends with a win. Save the post for posterity.

So Bruce, let me get this right;on Saturday we may;

1. Lose
Or
2. Win

Did I get understand you correctly?
 
This is the throw everything including the kitchen sink at them game for Iowa.

I'm sure NW will come in with that mentality.

Now, if the Hawks will only use this throw it all out there plan.
 
I watched the BTN 60 Minutes broadcast of the NW-Michigan game tonite. Michigan never really ever stopped NW's offense...they won because in the second half NW turned it over 3 times,and Michigan scored TD's each time. Michigan also took opening kickoff of the second half the length of the field for a td....they outscored them 28-0 to come from 24-14 deficit. But honestly,Michigan could not stop them,even once. I think NW punted like twice the whole game. And the other undefeated team that beat NW close,the illini, did not stop them either.
Michigan and Illini,both undefeated with supposedly tough defenses had no chance vs NW 's offense....so Iowa is going to stop them?...no. Iowa has to outscore them and hope for turnovers...that is the only way to win this game. It will be close. NW is going to scare every single team on their schedule the rest of the way...just watch.
 
I hope Iowa chooses option 2 but I would bet that the coaching staff chooses option 1 and NW puts a ringer on us.
 
The biggest problem we may have is our defensive ends trying to contain Persa. It could be a long day if our defensive backfield doesn't play like maniacs.
 
Yunno. I gotta say that there might be a very remote outside option.

How about Norm goes all crazy and sends extra pressure from all over the field. Morris can blitz, Hyde can blitz, Prater can blitz, Kirksey can blitz.

Why let the guy coming off the Hammy tear get comfy?

Of course there is always option 1 on D where he has all the time in the world to dink and dunk you to death.

i think its a safe bet that if our D-line from last year couldn't get pressure on Persa, that this D-line won't either. so, i guess we'll just have to hope for poor accuracy from old P bad and that our LB's will be able to keep up with their WR's in the slot.

everything about our D matches up poorly with their O. they won't ever have to throw at prater and hyde's guys, they'll have a dinged nielsen or someone like miller with limited experience guarding someone that they'll go to all day.

daniel and alvis haven't had a good game yet, doubt they'll have a great game on saturday.

lastly, we better no get too conservative on O. we'll need all the points we can get if we hope to have a shot. if we get the ball with under 2 min to go at half, we better at least try to get some points or we might as well give up.

CAAR, I seem to be "quoting" you a lot lately. Promise I'm not stalking, just coat-tailing of your excellent points and hoping to add a little ...

I was thinking this earlier this week ... There is simply no way the base 4-3 defense has any shot to pressure / contain SUPERsa (they have yet to set an edge against any team they've played and the LB's have been weak in position, prevention and tackling all year - except Kirksey), let alone keep NwU from scoring.

I say change up to a tight 3-4. NwU isn't going to beat you via the rush so 3 down is adequate. By tight I mean the LB's cheat closer to l.o.s. but play wider. This compensates for run support but primarily intends to always keep 4 in the areas NwU usually guts the Hawks with the dink & dunk. The wider alignment creates the natural containment "net". Finally, you send a blitzer on every 2nd AND 3rd > 5 to get SUPERsa always on the move. Bring up the safety / corner to man the area vacated by the blitzer. Yes, this exposes the back end but, since when has SUPERsa ever beaten Iowa with the long ball? If you can get him moving on every pass attempt, it's even more difficult for him to launch downfield. He will break contain / find his receiver for the short route but he will also have to work for it every single time. And, as you implied, with a little luck, Persa might take some hits and / or strain something else.

Base 4-3 = loss.
Blitzkrieg 4-3 = still too many release outlets for SUPERsa and too many opportunities to break DL contain.
Blitzkrieg 3-4 = better contain, more disruption and pressure on SUPERsa.
Blitzkrieg 3-4, with cover 2 / 3 (depending on blitz call), safeties cheating up 3 yards closer than normal and corner-man = best opportunity for adequate coverage down field with focus on preventing being gutted.

I know, risky, but G-dam-it I want to physically dominate those purple p!55ants, make SUPERsa hurt until next Friday and win going away 38 - 3!!
That ain't gonna happen with a business as usual approach.
 
There is one thing everyone can be assure of is that we will not see a 3-4 defense being utilized this Saturday.

We are going to see plenty of bull rushes with the idea of keeping Persa contained in the pocket.

I can't think of a time under Kirk in which that had this kind of plan for a game.

He seems pretty confident that if Iowa just executes that they will give themselves the best chance of winning.
 
Wow - I'm afraid Persa is going to drive the field at will with 10-15 yd passes, hopefully only getting field goals. I'm guessing that their defense isn't that great, so maybe Iowa can put up 1 more point then them.

Is that because you don't think the staff will stray from base or because you think it is schematically / strategically inclined to fail against SUPERsa and the purple *******?

I will take the 4-3 bull rushes -- no stunts and no spins that inherently lead to loss of contain with this DL -- as long as they come from a wider-than-normal alignment with the intent to simply put a fence around SUPERsa, keep his feet moving and occupy the OL so the LB's and FS can maintain the underbelly and / or break off to blitz more cleanly.

It is a little late to be changing your entire defensive scheme. Our coaching staff is not known to make drastic changes and off the top of my head I cannot recall any team that has switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 in the middle of a season. This is usually something done in the off season and you recruit based on the scheme you are going to run.
