Two Tight End Sets

Prepare to see alot of two tight end sets in 2011.

You have an accurate QB, what could be the best o-line in the league, and what should be the best tight end tandem in the conference. The other factor here is that Herman and CJ are very good sized TE's, or more accurately, freaking huge. If what is coming out of camp is correct, CJ has greatly improved his blocking and that could prove to be one of the biggest assets for the Hawkeye passing game. You have to respect smash mouth with this lineup.

When we line up with two TE's who are powerful, you've got to change your defense or you are going to get 4-5 yarded to death. We will own the edges. You also have to go to man coverage to allow your LB's and safeties to play run support first. Everyone's got man coverage which also bodes well for McNutt, Davis, and KMM.

This may be one of the more versatile offensive teams we will have had.

Ok, maybe I'm buying into the less than four week insanity, but I think this offense will average 32-35 points a game. They are going to wear you down, then beat you senseless.

I love the way this group is shaping up.

"They are going to wear you down, then beat you senseless." Man, I love the way you think! That's the best thing i've heard in a long time, and I agree with you 100%!!!!!!!!!

Best TE tandem in the conference?
Every pre-season mag and college football writer would disagree with you.

A lot of programs have good individual TEs. Michigan has a good one, tOSU has a good one, Illinois has a good one, Indiana has a good one, ... and there are others too.

However, if you look at the Big 10 programs that have TEs but also consistently like to use them ... then the main ones that come to mind are Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan State.

When you look at Wisky, they have Petersen who's a really good one ... but I really don't think that they have two guys who are on the same sort of level as Herman and CJ Fed.

Michigan State has some good ones in Linthicum and Sims (is Celek still there?). Also, Nebby has 2 good guys in their receiving TE + Cotton.

The ONLY reason why Iowa's TEs aren't getting more pre-season publicity is that we don't have a returning starter. However, what they're not accounting for is the fact that Herman was effectively a starter in our 2-TE sets.

Anyhow ... I agree with the assertion of the OP that Iowa's group of TEs has the chance to be the best group in the conference. However, folks aren't considering them that because we didn't return our #1 TE.

ummmmm, wow calm down there brutha. Now i'm a big time optimist and all and i think we'll go 11-1 this year, but seriously, 35 points a game. Even if we have the firepower to do that, which might be legit, the overall team strategies and methods of play we employ are not meant to create a team that scores 35 points a game. If we're averaging 35 points a game that means cokers not getting the ball enough. I do however agree with your initial premise that we'll see a lot of two tight end sets and that it will be a very good thing for us creating matchup issues.

Nice follow up post homer. Perfectly stated in regard to the OP. I also think we may be throwing Hamilton into this mix before the year is over. My understanding is that he showed up with a solid frame and is somewhat of a manchild. To think our TE's will go 255 and 267...and with the skill they must have in the blocking area or they won't play...7 offensive linemen to contend with.

IF the LB's first step is forward, he's screwed. And if I saw 6"7" 267 coming at me like he's going to hit me...I'm moving forward. That's crazy size.

I just have to think KF is really liking what he has with this team offensively. It sets up for complete ball control and out of ball control capability comes the big play. I really think this team has the chance to play a little like the 2002 team at the end of games. They ran the ball at the end of games and there wasn't much anyone could do about it. Vandenberg's accuracy is another big factor. Most college teams will give you the 5 yard out depending on your formation...with his velocity...move the chains.

One of the big deficiencies in the 2010 team was their inability to control the ball at the end of the games and score points in the fourth quarter. Last year's offense obviously didn't keep our defense off the field for very long either.

I think this offensive team, if the O-line stays healthy, controls the ball. With what we heard yesterday, I think our RB depth is better than many of us thought. McCall is legitimate, and you still have Coker. Someone also told me the coaches have really liked what they have seen with Johnson..."he's a different player" is the quote from Lester.

And what I like about this possible scenario is when you pound the ball repeatedly and the other team's defense starts to tire a bit and guessing run, you hit them with play action pass. The opportunities could really be wide open for McNutt, Davis, KMM, etc. etc. etc. That is really what KFz likes to employ in his teams offense.
