Two Iowa Hoops Questions

Here is why I do not believe that Brommer is going anywhere...

Down like 30 at the time, but busts his @ss down the floor to block a dunk on a fast break on Sunday night. That doesn't happen if you have any intuition of leaving. Why work hard even when you are down 30 knowing that you are almost done here.

I can think of a few ...

1. Self pride
2. To stick in the coach's face for not giving you quality minutes
3. He was playing in front of family and friends
4. Minnesota recruited him then Tubby pulled the offer

We'll have to agree to disagree (imagine that :)). I think Tubby Smith gets 4 -5 more wins from this team.

I think we also see differently on who is accountable for most of the transfers out. We'd all like to see what Lick can do with a full roster. But if it hasn't happened after three seasons, I become skeptical that it can (or will) ever happen.
I agree Tubby Smith is a great coach and would love to have him at Iowa. However, Minnesota lost at Indiana this year, lost by 19 at Ohio State, and lost at Michigan (by 28 points - on Senior night :) ). There has also been some issues with players (legal troubles, White leaving the program and Nolen being academically ineligible). I am only pointing out that some bad games and issues happen with the great coaches too.

That said, Minnesota's program is in much better shape with better players and the credit goes to the coach. I am not sure how Tubby would do with this roster at Iowa, but I think he would have some of the same troubles as Lickliter at times. Overall, with his experience at the places he has been, I think he would have handled things better. I am not sure how many more wins that may have been (4 or 5 more wins may be possible). I think that is a fair statement.

It will be interesting to see if there is player movement this offseason. I am hopeful that the program does not lose anyone, but I can't say I would be surprised if someone does leave. It is unfortunate, but it is also reality.

1. Self pride This I will give you.
2. To stick in the coach's face for not giving you quality minutes He does get quality minutes, however when you last 9mins before getting 5 fouls you wonder why your minutes aren't more
3. He was playing in front of family and friends I'm thinking that this isn't the 1st time he played infront of them
4. Minnesota recruited him then Tubby pulled the offer Happens many times when you get a change of a coach

As for #2 you can't blame Licklitter for not playing Brommer given Brommer's previous play. He was ineffective (at best) as a freshman and hadn't shown much change earlier in this season.

At the begnining of February there were very few fans that would have given Brommer the time of day. To Brommer's credit, he earned back the respect of many fans in the last month.

He had 35 family members there watching him at that game.

+1 It is fun to see when a player like Brommer seems to work hard and improve and is rewarded with some playing time.

Serious questions for those that still follow Iowa basketball:

1. What has Lickliter done to instill confidence in those that support him that suggests he can turn it around at Iowa? Nothing. He isnt willing to change his approach to BB, in order to attract the kind of talent that other B10 teams are getting. If we cant come close to matching the talent level in the rest of the league, we wont compete for B10 titles. EVER.

2. Is the worst case scenario that Barta doesn't have enough information to make a good decision on Lickliter's future next year. For example say Lick goes 7-11 in conference and 17-13 overall, is that good enough to keep him another year or bad enough to get rid of him? If those numbers are the goal in Barta's mind, is that lowering the bar too much?
3 years is more than enough time to gather information about a coaches ability to get the job done. TL is recruiting certain types of players to fit his system, right? What happens when those players arent available to sign or have no interest in signing with Iowa? You end up signing a bunch of role players (sound familiar) and no difference makers. His days are numbered.

Iowa will play 32 regular season games next year with the additional one in the 8 team Virgin Isle tourny so getting to that 17 win mark will be a bit easier this year.
If Iowa goes 17-15(7-11) I doubt very much that they will be invited to the NIT...maybe the CBI...but in SA's last year we went 17-13(9-7) in the regular season and were passed over.

Iowa's schedule will be littered with 7 cupcakes, with 3 games in the holiday tourny, three games vs ISU,Drake and UNI,and the ACC Challenge game...14 games...can we win 10? I think the ISU,Drake and UNI games will be tossups next year as UNI and ISU are at CHA...Drake will be better and it is in Des Moines.
Holiday tourny will probably give us one gimmeee,vs St Peters..and two relatively tough games. ACC Challenge will be on the road...nuff said. The cupcakes better be true cupcakes next year,no sleepers like USTA or Duquense in there cus we have to win all 7.

I think we could pull off the 10-4 in the nonconference and we could get to (7-11) in the conference...getting us to 17-15..going into the BTT. Good enough? Not for me,unless we make a run in the BTT and make the NIT...or we have like a 6 game winning streak at the end where it is clear that it suddenly all clicked in and Iowa is suddenly very dangerous.
