Turning Point Yesterday

Initially, I would note that Iowa should've won that game by double digits. Where has the offense gone? Where's the defensive effort? While we aren't moving the ball to get good looks offensively, our defense is lagging off their shooters at the perimeter, giving them great looks to stay in the game.

With all that said, even without Iowa's best effort, Iowa was still up and in control of the game with a few minutes remaining. That is when Iowa brought it up quickly and passed the ball to Jok who had a wide open look at a 3, and nobody was getting many wide open looks yesterday. But instead of taking the open 3 and potentially stretching a 3 point lead to 6, and likely causing OSU to have to intentionally foul for the rest of the way (which would've given Iowa so free offensive scoring opportunities on a night where they were actually hitting their free throws), Jok held the ball and waited for both teams to get up and set. Jok then passed the ball to Gesell, who ran down the clock, and then drove to the hoop, throwing up a prayer that got blocked as the shot clock expired. OSU then came down and hit a game-tying 3.

I understand that Iowa has had some success taking the air out of the ball in the waning minutes; but yesterday, the game was too close to have that strategy. And it came back to bite Iowa in a big way. Instead of being up at least 3 and maybe 4-6 after that sequence, the game was tied and OSU had all the momentum.

This is not an attack on Jok personally, as he has been one of the few bright spots in this month of February. Rather, it is an attack on the mentality of this Iowa team. They need to have that killer instinct to put their opponent away...no more of this take the air out of the ball stuff unless we have a hefty lead.

I for one am thankful that February is over, and hope that Iowa can turn the page and get their mojo back for March. If not, we'll all be playing the "what could have been" game for the next 7 months.

We weren't taking the air out of the ball. Jok said he was still feeling sick and had been short all day...and that's why he didn't take the shot. I wish he had taken the shot but it was his decision not to take it.

The turning point Sunday was shortly after the tip, I would say the first 4 minutes. First possession beautiful screen and roll, Adam couldn't catch the pass. Next few trips included a TO, and a brick by Jok...we were not engaged and in charge.

The ********* 4th foul call on Jok was key. Had is guy sealed, Woodbury throws a perfect pass and they call Jok for an offensive foul as hes getting pushed from behind. Instead of Jok shooting FTs because Iowa was in the bonus, Ohio State comes down and gets a bucket. Jok goes to the bench with his 4th and a 4 point swing that shouldnt have happened. Just an absolutely dreadful call

Wash, rinse, repeat. On the front page of this board there are 16, count 'em, sixteen threads about how bad the Hawks suck and there are tons of reasons why.

How's the weather where you're at, man? Love me some baseball starting.

I agree that was a bad call. But that was with 8-1/2 minutes left. Iowa was up 6 with 4 minutes left. The sequence I referred to above was with about 3 minutes left. Turns out my numbers were slightly off. Iowa was up 4 when Jok passed up the 3. OSU then came down and hit the 3 to get within one. Then, after a missed layout by Gesell, OSU came down and hit a 2 for a 1 point lead.

Regardless, I remember feeling pretty good when up 6 with 4 minutes left and when Jok passed up that 3, my stomach just turned.

If Jok wasn't feeling good as another poster said, to the point where he'd pass up a wide open 3 (when we weren't getting many good looks offensively), he shouldn't have been in the game.

This. I also think Wagner's injury had something to do with it. He was putting in some high energy minutes and then get clobbered on a drive to the hoop. It seemed like our energy level just wasn't there after that.

yeah I already started a thread about this same play and lack of aggressiveness, didnt know jok was sick.

I believe the score was 66-64 and Jok had a clean look at a 3, but as soon as he released it you could tell it was off line. It was early in the shot clock, the shot was there though. Jok hits that shot I think Iowa wins.
