Trump supporters, how do you square this?

Most people are smart enough to understand causation vs correlation and why one does not equal the other.

The problem is that correlation not implying causation is valid 100% of the time, not just when you want it to be valid. Most people (and a lot of people here who can't think for themselves without Musk or RFK or Bernie Sanders or AOC) apply the C/C principle only when it suits their narrative or the situation.
I'm not sure most people are smart enough to understand correlation vs causation. Maybe they are, but we are definitely in a time where people believe what they believe and go searching for evidence to support their feels.

IT'S THE GUNS!!!!

The USA has more guns in civilian hands than other countries have in their armed forces and police. The more guns a country has, the more mass shootings are going to happen.

Almost every other country has violent video games, violent movies, violent tv shows, has access to drugs - both recreational and prescribed.

The 2nd Amendment was instituted when it took a few minutes to reload your musket. Weapons aren't the same anymore and should be harder for people to get their hands on weapons used by armed forces and police.

Why are drugs being treated harsher than the guns??? Both have the ability to harm and kill, but we can't talk about gun restrictions???

Why shouldn't guns be registered or you have to be licensed to have one? We do it with vehicles...

I believe we have well over 400 MILLION guns in the US, and you'd have to be a straight up idiot to think that's not a major factor in gun violence. The sheer availability of guns is astronomical.

Fun info:

20 years ago, a man walked into Dunblane Primary School and murdered 16 children. Soon after, the UK banned ownership of all handguns. There have been no school shootings in the UK since.

I realize this is Murika and that kind of a law might be unrealistic. But it does paint a rather stark difference in our two cultures, and the acceptance of mass shootings (particularly ones that mow down children).

The UK has about 30 gun deaths per year. 30. The US, in 2020, had 19,384. Must be medications causing this.

Not to mention the likely "correlation but not causation" issue. Most people who miss work due to a cold are probably taking cold medicine...but that doesn't mean the cold medicine made them miss work.
This is a big issue for coming to a conclusion. Pretty much 100% of people who shoot up schools are going to be considered depressed so likely they will be on meds. One way around it would be find another country with guns who doesn't issue certain medications for depression the US does. If they have lots of guns, no meds, and very few shool shootings, maybe there's something to it.

Since you mention vehicles, how about a mandatory breathalyzer installed on every vehicle as an effort to reduce drunk driving deaths? Once the vehicle has started there's a mandatory breath check every 30 minutes which would allow the vehicle to continue to run? Everyday about 37 people in the US die in drunk driving crashes.

Taking away guns would obviously help reduce gun murder. The question is does it reduce total murder. If the option is getting stabbed or bombs going off everywhere, I'd prefer to get shot.

Other things we can do is lower speed limits to 25 mph, eliminate motorcycles and off road vehicles, make sky diving illegal, make swimming and recreational boating illegal....

All that said, yours isn't a bad idea.

The problem with that logic is the USA has had guns forever. School shootings is a recent issue.

I wonder if access to handguns/guns could be part of the problem

A lot of things have been recent issues, it doesn't mean guns aren't the problem.

Excuses are what the gun nuts always have, never once have they pointed to the guns.
If guns weren't a problem in the past but they are now, and if guns have been around the whole time, then that means it's something else. I understand how you can be really short sighted and say "they used a gun to kill someone so if you take away the gun, it won't happen" (and you would possibly be right) but there are a lot of other factors that you aren't considering.

One factor is people can get guns if they're illegal just like they get drugs now. Another is people would lose a right to protect themselves because guns save a lot of lives too. Another is what I said earlier. There is clearly a new factor here. Without fixing that factor, there will still be people who have the desire to mass kill. Without a gun, most will just find another way like build a bomb or drive into a crowd. Another is everyone knows that people have guns. Without that threat, people might very well be more apt to commit a crime. And last but not least, citizens having guns keep government in check. Take away that and a govement can do whatever they want. And before you pull a Biden and say "they would need F-16s to fight the government", I'd like to remind you of Jan 6th where a crowd of people almost overthrew the government without a single gun.

The interesting thing here is that America is not a monolith. It's pretty diverse, and states are different. What do you notice in this graphic below?(courtesy of Pew Research)

Thoughts and prayers.

Look I realize that we all follow our political beliefs (key word is beliefs).

But, isn't this issue important enough for all of us to be open to looking at all possible causes, and seek to remedy the root and proximal causes of gun violence? It's disappointing to see the deniers and apologists. Can we do better?

Then why haven't other countries had similar issues????

That's right, they enacted stricter guns laws and regulations.

The problems we have are very similar to the problems of other countries, so you can't throw a blanket statement that we have to find out what's causing these massive gun crimes.

Why is it soooooo damn easy to buy a gun, but harder to get a fishing license???? You can buy a gun anywhere at these shows and you have to register to catch a damn fish. You need a permit to build on your own land. I could go on and on.

They might as well just give kids a small pistol in their Happy Meals at McDonalds.

Stop being logical. It drives some of these folks up a wall.

Here's a hint. Don't use any type of data, studies, or information from other countries.

Only use your emotions, what your dear leader told you to say, and what Joe Rogan said on his last podcast.
Idiocracy here we come.
