Trump supporters, how do you square this?

I don’t know honestly. I think it needs to be studied and a question that should be asked. I for one think our country is so over medicated. We have a pill for anything and everything.
Thanks.

With that thought, I also know that we have a big issue with patients having access to proper mental health care. Also, funding for mental health care is abysmal.

The problem is likely multifactorial, and we should put some serious national-level attention on it. Thoughts and prayers ain't gettin it done.

Going back to every school shooter since Columbine and seeing what medication they were all on would be a good place to start.

Personal Story: Gene was placed in an iron lung, Gary suffered damage from polio. I was elementary school age and our small community in NW Iowa was terrified. My parents were stressed out. Vaccine came along. Everyone jumped in. Gene and Gary survived. We played football together in high school. Actually went undefeated and ranked #3 in Iowa in the smaller school division. The DM Register did the rankings in those days. No “official rankings or playoffs. 1961-1962. Gene and Gary were both wing backs in the old wing T formation.

Kennedy should be charged with attempted murder.

But someone posted an article on Twitter that said vaccines cause autism!!!

It has to be true if it's on Twitter!!!

All hail the holy beacon of truth Comrade Dear Leader Elonovich Muskova!!!

39% of Des Moines students are chronically absent

Headline from the DMR

Serious problem, the uneducated can also vote, obviously

Probably a parent issue, my children were dropped off at school every day they weren't sick
I'm willing to bet they were dropped off at school on days they were sick too to them the importance of education and the fact that you need to suck it up in the real world.

Someone posted an article on Twitter!? I guess that means the source wasn't the person who posted, or the article itself. The source was clearly......Twitter.

It's amazing the pushback people get for saying vaccines need better trials (you think the punishment should be attempted murder). It's even more amazing that's not a red flag for some people.

No, just promoted with bias from twitter's algorithm.

You use twitter as your information curator, stupidly thinking it's being fed to you without manipulation. You do you, though, I don't have the energy to argue with entrenched sheeple. Nothing's going to change your mind just like nothing was going to change the mids of Jim Jones' cult members. I'll just point out the stupidity of it when I get bored enough.

What you're saying now doesn't match up with what you said earlier. Your last post insinuated an article was less valid because it was posted on Twitter. This post insinuates I'm just more likely to see the article because of an algorithm. Those are two separate things. You clearly believe both things (even tho you're now pretending you don't believe the first). I only believe the latter.

Just to be clear here. All social media uses algorithms to determine what to show you. Those algorithms are meant to show you what it thinks you want to see. Nothing wrong with that. What twitter was doing before Musk bought it was basing the algorithm off what it wanted you to see instead of what it thought you would want to see. Even worse is they were doing it at the request of the White House.

Does Musk still do that, just in the other direction? Maybe. But mine sure seems to do a pretty good job of showing me both sides. Which makes sense because I want to see both sides.

Wow. That's alarming. Yes, I believe it is a parent problem, but I also know that educators and staff are really hand tied when it comes to enforcing anything with kids anymore.

A big part of it is definitely a parent problem and it has been from the start of their lives. Helicopter/bulldozer parents are the worst. They're the real problem. Aiden can't do anything wrong. I want life to be perfect with nothing standing in his way of being happy 24/7 instead of experiencing some things that may be uncomfortable. Anything you say to my kid has to be okayed by me first.

Poverty can play a part in it too. Stats show that low SES students underperform. It's why public school's standardized test scores are lower than private schools. Take out the low SES kids and the numbers are even. The low SES kids, though, are often looking for anything positive in their life including positive interactions and someone that cares about them. I love teaching those kids. They're easy to teach. Treat them as equals because they don't feel equal. It's the kids of the snobby kids that are the toughest. They're better than everyone else and you sure as hell better not treat them as equals.

I also know that educators and staff are really hand tied when it comes to enforcing anything with kids anymore. They don't want to get sued and they don't want to enforce and/or hold any kids back anymore due to the percentage numbers they want to achieve.

Talk about having to watch what I say. If you read cases that were taken to the BOEE, every teacher has done dozens of those things that could get their license suspended. Taking school property out of a dumpster. Giving a kid with a coughing attack a drink out of their (the teacher's) water cup. Giving a kid Tums. Having a kid, that volunteered, stand on a table to get a dying light bulb stop flashing. Telling someone of the opposite sex that they look nice today. Basically you can't treat them like people. No relationships, nothing pleasant, no good Samaritan. Nothing. You're just a lecturer.

As for the percentages we have to achieve. The state is stupid. We had a special ed kid that wasn't proficient 2 years ago go up more than twice the expect annual growth on her standardized test last year. It counted against us because she got a 548 and needed a 550 to be proficient. F the state and their non-educator legislators.

Kid's aren't held accountable AT ALL anymore and THEY know it, which is a bad formula.

Yep. So many of them just don't care or have that attitude that "when am I ever going to need this" attitude. I hear it all of the time (I teach math) and I ask them when they will need to know osmosis, Shakespeare, or the War of 1812. "I won't." "Then drop out." I got into it with a kid (normal conversation) about a month ago when he said he'd never need to know about loans. We were doing a unit on car loans and mortgages. Not using the formulas, but how they work, strategies to help them save money, etc. "I'm just going to pay cash like Dave Ramsey says to do." "He's an idiot that's just out to make a buck. Take his advice if you're ok living in a cardboard box and driving a shopping cart."

Had a kid 2 or 3 weeks ago make fun of a girl because she didn't understand what I was teaching. Our conversation:

"How do you not get this"

"There's no way anyone can get this because you don't shut up long enough to let them learn it."

"F off. This shit's easy." (I didn't kick the kid out because that's what he wanted. Really pissed him that I didn't)

"Maybe it's because you're smarter than everybody in here."

"Probably"

"I'm not so sure. You told me to F off. I know what the F word means, so why don't you clean up your language next time and tell me to 'intercourse off'? Wait, that makes no sense. I guess it makes sense to someone that's the smartest person in the room. Could you explain it to us."

"What?"

"And, if you're so smart, I'm sure you can find a way not to end your statement with a preposition next time. I'll understand what you're saying because I usually speak with proper grammar."

"You're only smart because you're old."

"I'm not as smart now as I was when I was your age because I've forgotten a lot of stuff from the other classes you're taking. I'm smart because I'm old and have been through a lot and finally get it. Now, back to where we were."

If he kept going I would have sent him out of his room. As it is, I didn't have to deal with his parents because he comes by it honestly.

The people asking for better trials often know nothing about the issue. But they have podcasts!!!!

Maybe before starting with your answer and going back to try to find proof, a better way would be to look at all mass shooters over a couple of decades and see what they have in common first, and then study that.

Your way may be correct, but has confirmation bias built into it. You are already looking for to prove an answer that you already think is correct. It COULD be correct, but why start so narrow?

It seems like a better approach to study any common characteristics of these people before chasing zebras. It's just more logical that way.

Not to mention the likely "correlation but not causation" issue. Most people who miss work due to a cold are probably taking cold medicine...but that doesn't mean the cold medicine made them miss work.

Everyone who confuses correlation with causation ends up dead.

I also hate the "because it is correlation, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT causation" crowd. Because you know what? In many cases a correlation exists because there is a causitive relationship, especially if there are underlying mechanisms that could logically explain causation. It just cannot be proven by the correlation alone.

Most people are smart enough to understand causation vs correlation and why one does not equal the other.

The problem is that correlation not implying causation is valid 100% of the time, not just when you want it to be valid. Most people (and a lot of people here who can't think for themselves without Musk or RFK or Bernie Sanders or AOC) apply the C/C principle only when it suits their narrative or the situation.
