True freshman participation

Can anyone tell me a little bit about each of the true freshman that played last week. Other than Morris and CJ, I am not familiar with them. I have six: Meyer, Kirksey, Lowery, Miller, CJ and Morris.

I am kind of surprised that Meyer is beating out Mullings on kickoff duty. I realize Internet legends can be made without deserving the reputation. However, I had heard from reliable sources that they really felt Mullings would win KO duties. Can anyone shed any light on that area as well?

Thanks in advance.

With regard to Mullings, I suspect that the issue could be that the coaches want him to focus more on improving his punting technique. From what I've heard, while he can boot the ball a long ways, he's really slow in his delivery. Thus, he's a punt block waiting to happen until he can execute with good technique more quickly.

Also, Meyer has a big leg and proved himself to be quite impressive too.

Regarding Kirksey, he was a tackling machine in high school and his high school coach referred to him as an exceptionally impressive athlete to boot. Kirksey is still a little bit on the undersized side of the spectrum, however, he has great instincts and the coaches probably feel that it would benefit him to get up to game speed sooner rather than later.

Regarding Tanner Miller, he's actually a Husker legacy who played for Mid Prarie ... and in high school, he was not only a team leader and a dominant player ... but he was also a VERY impressive state track star (high hurdles). By my recollection, I think he actually received track scholarships from some D1 programs too. The thing about the kid is that he's not just a "track guy" ... he's also tough football player. There's a reason why he's seemingly already playing with the 2nd team D. Considering Iowa's lack of experienced depth at safety, it's definitely a VERY good idea to develop more depth at safety.

As for Lowery, he's a guy who was a star on his high school team in Cincinnati. The problem is that his high school team sucked ... so that ended up hurting his overall recruitment (but helped our Hawks). Anyhow, he's a kid who everybody at his school and around his high school program absolutely loved. He's another one of those high-character people who also happens to be tremendous athlete to boot. From what I recall hearing, during his recruitment the Iowa coaches regarded him a lot like they regarded Hyde ... and they loved Hyde. They really thought that he had the potential to contribute early ... and, since he hit campus, it sounds like he's proven them correct.

Only one edit homer. He played for Mid Prairie and is from Wellman, IA

I was just going off of memory ... I was thinking of one old EIHC school but wrote down another. Bad homer ....

haha, guess you're allowed one mistake. I just happen to be from the area and know the kid/family. When someone comes out of small town Iowa, we have to make sure we get the facts right :D
