Tristan Wirfs and the draft

Here's some good pub on how the draft is looking at Tristan Wirds, from the AZ Republic:

In their latest mock drafts, Kiper and Jeremiah both have the Cardinals selecting offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, a junior from Iowa. Wirfs can play either tackle position but has spent most of his career on the right side, which is where the Cardinals presently have an area of need considering they just re-signed left tackle D.J. Humphries to a three-year contract extension.

Like others, Kiper and Jeremiah believe Wirfs could be pushed inside and turn into a potential All-Pro at guard. Wirfs could dispel that notion and insist he is a tackle, however, with a strong performance at the combine.

Kiper has Wirfs as the second offensive tackle off the board, following Alabama’s Jedrick Wills to the Chargers at No.6. Jeremiah has Louisville’s Mekhi Becton going No.4 to the Giants, Wills to the Chargers at 6, and then Wirfs to Arizona at 8 with Georgia’s Andrew Thomas going to the Browns at No.10.

Jeremiah includes Wirfs as one of the top prospects who has the most to gain next week in Indianapolis, saying, “If he goes out there and puts on an athletic show, which I’ve heard there’s a chance he does, then he can kind of put that to bed and say, ‘Look, I am a tackle. I’m not sliding inside. That’s what I am.’ So, I think he’s got a chance to help himself there.”

I never thought about that but if his arms are too short that will probably come out at the combine.

Didn't we have someone in the last few years where that was an issue?

Does it matter how long his arms are if his opponent is on his back?

Depends on who drafts him. If he gets drafted by a team like New England, Green Bay or Kansas City where the refs won't call holding on big passing plays, then you need him to have long arms in order to properly execute the critical hold that goes uncalled.

Oh great now we're going to start hearing the "short arms" BS like we did with Rieff and whoever else.

I bet if he would have stayed for his senior year Doyle could have at least increased his wingspan by 5 inches, just another case of guys leaving early when that extra year could have helped them.

If a man with Wirfs' strength had a full 4 years with DOYLE, turning him loose on the NFL would be assault with a deadly weapon and manslaughter if someone died. I'm glad he's gone.

Some punter with short arms did more reps at the bench......Wirfs slides to the 4th round, book it. :)

From espn.com:

Iowa's Tristan Wirfs also had a notable effort on Friday, as the 320-pound offensive tackle put up a vertical jump of 36.5 inches -- the best by any offensive lineman at the combine since 2006. He topped Morgan State tackle Joshua Miles' jump of 36 inches at last year's combine.

Wirfs' vertical topped combine efforts by DeAndre Hopkins (36 inches), A.J. Green (34.5) and Amari Cooper (33) from previous years, and was better than the vertical leap of 26 wide receivers who worked out Thursday at the combine.

Wirfs also ran a 4.86 (unofficial) 40-yard dash, which would be the fastest by any player at least 320 pounds since 2006. The previous fastest was 4.92 by offensive lineman Greg Robinson in 2014.

Wirfs' broad jump of 10 feet, 1 inch was also a combine record for offensive linemen.
