Trey Dickerson - PTL

Has anyone seen Trey Dickerson in action in the PTL? I haven't read any comments about him. I thought he was playing; has he not made it to IC yet?

I was up at the game tonight in Waterloo and spent most of the night watching him.

He is incredibly quick and is a great finisher. I think he will play better in an offense when he knows where to go and what to do. There was numerous times tonight when he would do too much dribbling and make a bad pass. But there were some other times when he would make great outlet passes up the court to set up the break.

One thing I did note was him joking around with about five of his teammates. He seemed to get along great with them and this included Dom Uhl.

Perfect, thank you, Casey. I've been hoping and suggesting that his quickness would translate into better half court defense and offense. I just keep going back to not being able the keep quick guards out of the lane, last season, and not being able to get a good half court offense going against quick guards.

Ellington wasn't there. Neither was Oglesby.

I didn't get to see much of the game where Woodbury went against Gisele and Uh but I what I saw was interesting. First off there was a few times when Woodbury would get a rebound and start the break up the court. One time he took it from one end to the other and got fouled as he drove to the hoop. Gesell just did what he did early last year. Had some good drives to the hoop where he finished over or around bigger defenders. Also saw him hit a big three late in the game to extend his teams lead. Dom has a well rounded game. Dribbles the ball well for a player of his size and has some jumps in those legs. I saw at least one thunderous dunk from him. One where he was fairly contested and skied over the defender and threw it down.

I didn't see all of the last game but saw the first 15 or so minutes. Olaseni scored the first eight points for his team and Jok started of strong for his team as well. Gabe was hitting mid range shots and had two highlight dunks in those first eight points. One of an alley pop and one off a put back. Jok hit a few threes and was driving to the hoop like a man with a purpose. I was watching him shooting around right in front of us and his shot is so effortless even from 4 feet from behind the line. I really think he can be a number one or two guy for us this year as long as those legs stay strong.

During the first game with Uthoff vs White and Dickerson the main takeaway I had was that Uthoff's defense won that game for them. Well that and Uni is gonna be good next year but more on that later. Uthoff played within himself and did a great job keeping White in front of him. He moved his feet well and was very disruptive. To be honest it seemed like he had 12 or 15 points not 29 but it must of been from all those mid range shots he was hitting.

White wasn't himself in this game. He ended with 20 but there was a few times he was stopped from driving and tried to throw up some really difficult shots. He was hitting the boards really well though.

As for Dickerson I stay with my earlier post. The one thing I forgot to say earlier was he has a unique looking shot from three. He has a little hitch in his shot and a quick release. As long as he's hitting them there won't be a defender that will be able to block them. And to reiterate about his quickness, I haven't seen someone that quick in a hawkeye uniform since Haluska or Horner. Properly quick and gets to the hole whenever he wants and isn't afraid of contact even though he is a slight build. I really didn't pay attention to his defense though other than the few times he had to switch on Koch and he was destroyed in the paint by him but then again even some of the post players were getting beat up by him.

As for Uni they are going to be strong. Morgan will be a force in the MVC. When his team needed a bucket they didn't give it to Uthoff, it usually went to Morgan. I didn't get to see much of Tuttle but you know he is going to be the same player as he has been for them. Koch is a bruiser. Moves well without the ball and pretty reliable within 10 feet. Him and Tuttle will be hard to stop. Washpun is nearly as quick as Dickerson but I'd say even slightly build.

The player that stole the show for us though had to be Jason Price. He is so fun to watch and clearly still has it. My wife asked me, who is that old guy on the court before the game started and I told her some of his back story. He wasn't hitting anything in warm-ups and I thought this will be interesting but as soon as the game started it was on. He was being exactly what you want with your court general. Moving the ball to the correct guys and throwing up oops to Gabe whenever possible. He was hitting threes and scoring layups as well. Just had a great showing in the fifteen minutes I saw him play. Donate showed he clearly is a D1 player. He has some muscle on him and makes work driving to the lane. I wouldn't be surprised to see Iowa or Uni reach out to him this winter. Haber from Brown University reminds me of a poor man's white with a better long range shot. Just has a nose for the ball and doesn't take plays off.

Ok that is pretty much it. I wish I could of stayed for more of the last game but was lucky enough to get a little bit of a hawkeye basketball fix to help get me through the summer.

"And to reiterate about his quickness, I haven't seen someone that quick in a hawkeye uniform since Haluska or Horner" I wouldn't use those two as the standards of quickness ;) I think Gessel is quicker than those two...as was Bryce Cartwright and several others...first step quickness I am thinking of. But those two were bigger guards, and that helped them create driving opportunities.

That said, I am picking nits..thanks for the post

Yeah I can see that. I was actually having trouble trying to think of who to compare him to. He has a noticeably quicker first step than both Gesell and Cartwright. I would have to look at the roster from the early 2000's or late 1990's to find someone as quick as him.

Does he compare to Dean Oliver, quickness-wise?

Here are some great highlights of last night's PTL game:

I think PJ, JU, DU and JO are going to be consistent and legit perimeter threats. White needs mid-range (I know, beating a dead horse), but he, Woody and GO should be consistent scorers in the paint. MG needs to be just a scorer and I think will play a lot more 2 than I originally thought, as TD looks the part of a pg. We won't have bulk, but we'll be damn quick, straight-line. TD is our lateral quickness guy.

Thanks for the report. Besides Horner being labeled in the quicks comparison your comment on White stuck out to me. Without seeing the game this write up seems exactly like his game but you labeled it as being not himself? White is a great high energy garbage guy who is great in the transition game. That is his best role and their is nothing wrong with that. The problem is he is trying to take it to another place that he does not seem to be capable of; dribble drive, shooting 3's, etc. We saw the stopped drives, throwing up difficult shots and unwillingness at times to take the open three last season from him to the point where he eventually became non existent from the wing position. That is we he needs to be back at the four to be around the basket.

The other interesting player besides TD is Uhl. What to do with him? He will not be strong enough to play and defend the 4 this season. Better suited for the 3. The issue is we have a lot of potential players for the 3 depending if we go big or small. So is he a redshirt despite his talent? Why waste a year if he only sees limited minutes because of a log jam at a position?

This team has so many questions in terms of getting the best 7-8 on the floor at all times.

I get what you are saying about the 3 position....but who can actually play there?
Oglesby- I think this might be his best position, but prefer him off the bench as instant offense.
Jok- again, might be well suited for this position, but prefer him at the shooting guard, starting.
Uthoff- will start at this position, but will struggle to guard true small forward types like Dez Wells, Ray Rice, Shavon Shields, Sam Thompson, Gasser, Irvin, Williams/Robinson of IU, ect.

I think this team still lacks a 6'5-6'' wing player who can guard those guys like Eric May could.

I could not agree with you more on the need for a true wing player. This is why I see the wing as a log jam spot because Fran is going to try and find minutes for various players depending on his combinations. This is the spot I see that happening. Utoff is the first candidate in order to get him on the floor for extended minutes. If/When he struggles Fran might go small and toss Jok or JO there. Where does that leave Uhl then?

This all hinges on TD. If he provides the missing piece from the point that throws Mike G into a different primary role for him (combo/off guard) and again the only other spot to work guys in is the 3. If TD is not what I hope then I can see a lot of problems trying to generate offense especially in the half court. No one is a creator besides TD potentially.

Defending other wings no matter who plays wing on our current roster is a real problem as you pointed out.

Next season is going to be very interesting to see how this works out.
