Tressel Resigning May Open Up Ohio Recruiting

For us and almost every other college program, the competition will be even more fierce than it was before.

It doesn't hurt, but with Nebraska coming to the Big Ten that is now another school that will recruit Ohio more heavily then in years past that Iowa will have to contend with now.

They just received another commitment today from a top in state safety. I don't think this does much. The best players in Ohio want to play for Ohio State, not necessarily Jim Tressel. I think the same thing would happen if Mack Brown had been fired last year. The best players in Texas would still want to play for Texas. IMO, losing a coach hurts the programs that don't have a strong in-state recruiting base far more. The only ties to that program for their top prospects is the coach. But these kids grew up worshiping the Buckeyes, and OSU will still get their pick.

Can someone explain this to me? people keep saying that Nebraska coming to the big 10 is going to hurt Iowa's recruiting. Wasn't Nebraska already going after the top players? Why are they NOW going to be a bigger threat?

OSU will be fine recruiting, always have been always will be. 8 commits already....This is the year there is a chance to get a kid ir two because of the uncertainty but UM and ND will reap the benefits much more than Iowa.

This years recruiting isn't going to be the issue. IF it starts becoming an issue (and i don't necessarily think it will) it will be after sanctions come down.

It's because they've traditionally been heavy recruiters in Texas and "nationally," but not in the midwest/B10 footprint. Now that they're in, they'll probably have a drop in interest in Texas since some of those kids want to play teams they relate to, and they'll look to expand in areas that have kids who have grown up relating to the B10.

I guess that make sense. More big ten recruiting area eyeballs will be on Nebraska and less big 12 recruiting eyeballs.

It's all about exposure and Nebraska will now get more then they ever had in the Big 12.

Sure they go after the top players, but I think because they played 1 or 2 games a year in Texas they put a lot of focus on that state. Not that they won't stop recruiting Texas but I think they recruit more to the East now with the exposure they will get combined with the lack of exposure they will get in Texas now.

Edit: I was trying to say what PhoenixHawk said but he explained it better.

I dont think it opens up ohio anymore than it is. OSU is OSU, its not Tressel U, he didnt build it. It was THE Ohio State before he was coaching.

I agree with the majority. Top Ohio prospects will continue to want to play in Ohio. Regardless of the coach, OSU is still OSU and will continue to dominate the recruiting in Ohio.

If there is one guy whose word you can take to the bank, it's this guy.

If you don't think what has and will happen to OSU will hurt there recruiting, you are mistaken. Just for evidence, watch Brionte Dunn. He's a life long OSU fan who committed early and I will bet you he bolts as soon as they find out exactly what the punishments will be.

They have re-affirmed commits with most everyone but Dunn. The uncertainty of the head coach may hurt some this year but it all depends on the severity of the NCAA punishment.

I don't think USC's recruiting restrictions have started yet, due to an appeal. When they do start, they'll suffer.

but why would a recruit want to go there knowing sanctions would be taking place while in attendance...did hurt their class this year
