Travel Planning to follow the Hawks

Anybody else starting to casually look into flights/hotel for Indy? I don't want to miss the Hawks first appearance in the B1G championship game. On the other hand, if they were somehow to make it and win, I'm not going to miss an appearance in the college football playoff or if they lose and end up in the Rose Bowl, I've been saying for 10 years now that if they made the Rose Bowl I'd be there.

Not complaining but there's a chance of spending some decent coin on traveling here in the next couple months and burning some vacation but not going to miss any of the experiences above.

Been thinking same thing. If they go to the championship game and lose they still probably go to the Rose Bowl. If they go and win probably in the playoff and for anyone on a budget do you go to the Big Ten title game or wait and go to the Rose or one of the playoff games. If a person can't do all of the above and can only do one which would be best to experience? Obviously still want as many fans in Indy as possible if they get there. Especially if it is against Dantonio. Just dislike that guy for whatever reason.

We bought our tickets at the start of the 4th quarter. I really enjoyed doing that while in the stands at Ryan Field.

After looking a little bit more into it today, I think driving is the way to go for Indy. From where I live, I think I could drive it in less than 7 hours.

I have been looking into flights and whatever to LA.

Stuff is available yet for pretty cheap.

What a huge gamble tho. I guess i could still go to the parade and just take the kids to disneyland or whatever if the hawks go elsewhere.

My friends and I have been casually planning on Indy. Hotels are ridiculous though. I think we saw $300 a night for that weekend. Its a 3 hour drive from Chicago though, which is worth consideration. Thing is the longer you wait the more expensive everything (tickets/flights/etc) are going to get. Indy would be flooded with hawk fans. It would be unreal.

I'm going to the Rose bowl whenever the Hawks make it next, no matter what. I've been saying that for 15 years now.

If the Hawks go to Indy, I will be there. I am lucky enough to be able to drive. When I stay over for away games, I typically pick a smaller town within 30-40 min. drive and get a motel room for 1/3 to 1/2 the price I would pay if I stayed in the site town. I will also likely go to Iowa's bowl game this year, and will travel with Hawkeyenation or the Alumni. Have not been motivated to attend a bowl game for awhile, though I have been to many over the years. This year is just too special to pass up, barring a complete melt down.

Not sure what your looking at but I found hotels for around $100 a night within 7 miles to stadium.Probably will pass and wait to see what bowl game we will go to.Doesnt matter what it cost if it's the Rose Bowl we will be there.

Yeah I just found the same. I was first looking downtown but that was going to cost more $300 a night.

I think my wife and I could drive, stay 2 nights, get tickets, eat/drink and do this weekend trip for right around $1K which I didn't think was too bad.

I'll be driving from Nashville, TN., as it's about a 4.5 hour drive.
Been to 2 B1G basketball tournaments in Indiana.
Hotels shouldn't be that much, that weekend.

We wouldn't have a car so we're looking downtown but I guess there's always Uber

This is why I'm staying 45 mins out in Crawfordsville the night before and after....$100 total.
I can meander in the day of and not miss anything.

Spending the 'extra' I saved on tickets for sure...no bleeders for me.

Made the trip from Des Moines last year. The B1G championship is really an affordable weekend if you don't blow it all on hotels. Downtown is steep but you can get within 15 minutes for $100. The fan fest is a great all day experience that is included with your tix. We spent almost all day there and they have a food court attached to their Skywalk so we ate cheap as well. Not to be a homer but if you can get tix before the Buckeyes clinch the east, ticket prices are affordable. Once they clinch, prices skyrocket.

Buy tickets through U of I. Trade U of I tix on either a tix web-site, or to a scalper for better tix.

St. Elmo's serves some choice, rather than prime, and gets to charge prime prices. It is good however, especially when they have baby or fingerling potatoes. Or just one roasted potatoe (with an e in honor of some folks I know)

Rose Bowl, and I hope not, this is our least favorable bowl destination for reasons I won't bore you with. Fly to LV, and rent a car.

Indy, motorhome with friends. Or if I drive and stay, certainly not going to pay Indy room rates.

Put some time and thought into it, and travel doesn't need to be outrageously expensive. Tix are $30 for every remaining Iowa game for I Club members and season tix holders. I got some friends tix in Section 106 for $30 for the remaining home games. Great deal for great seats. Ha

Having said this, away game tix this year have been more expensive even when the stadiums aren't sold out. I suspect lower season tix sales everywhere has led to fewer tix for scalpers and secondary market web-sites. J

Just some random observations that might, or might not be helpful to some.

It's good to have an old Iowa roommate who lives in Indy who invites you to stay with them...and it really is a pretty easy drive....money saved will go towards NC game Jan 11th in Glendale, AZ.

All that said, I will stick with my basic rule: I will not spend more than minimum wage per hour to sleep.
