Transfers??

Fair enough. I actually think Fran will get Connor (and/or Patrick) to walk on if he can get another player. Even Steve Alford did that with Bryce at UCLA. Of course, it didn't matter this year.

My point is, I think as a parent, I would care if I was improving the basketball team, or the orchestra, or the band, or the debate team. And, you are correct. It's not much different than donating to the university, except that you are directly effecting your child's team. Makes sense to me.

Alford probably asked for a discount on the tuition because....Well, because he's Alford.

If Fran could find a prize recruit having his son walk on might cut into his sons possible minutes or someone else that committed to the coaching staff. I can see the benefits, but there are a lot of potential problems too. If his son isn't a real solid star and plays a lot of minutes, the fan base would go wild. Look what they did with Gesell and Clemmons. I think he probably would have a lot of problems beating out some of the players on the roster for at least the first couple of years. Ferentz turned down a center that ended up going to Ohio State whose dad was at Iowa. I imagine because he was looking after his boy.

I would be in favor of adding a PG to the roster if possible. I think Bohannon can add value in years to come but I also am not sure he's ready to be thrown in the fire as a true freshman and Williams probably isn't at a point to play 35 minutes a game.

I guess it it will be interesting to see how things shake out but I am fully anticipating Jok returning and we need him but still doesn't solve the lack of depth/options at the PG spot.

Didn't Austin Blythe's family pay for his college to help the football team out.I'm not sure if it was for more than one year, but it has happened at Iowa.It would give Iowa roster flexibility in case a 5th year transfer made his decision late. It could also allow players to redshirt without hurting team depth.

Everywhere I see he's a 4 star, 247/Rivals/ESPN top 100 recruit - went to the Nike Elite 100 camp... most of those guys can go just about anywhere. I don't think he's Carmelo, but to me it seems odd that everyone just assumes Fran's paying. I'm probably wrong. Doug McBuckets walked on his senior year to make room for Grant Gibbs and I think Bryce Alford is doing the same. I obviously see the advantage, I am not appalled by the notion more kind of shocked how everyone just expects it. IMO, if he's good enough to get a scholarship he should get one despite who his old man is.

This!
Yes top 100 recruit everywhere you look. Don't say something inaccurate to try your point. He is going to be wanted by many.

Agreed.

Earning a scholarship is a big deal to an athlete. Just because a kid winds up playing for his dad doesn't mean he should pass on the scholarship that he earned. This really has nothing to do with whether or not dad can afford to pay.

But it has everything to do with wasting a scholarship that could be used on another player who would help the team.

Are you worried about the kid being butt hurt or what's good for the team? Big picture here.

I don't give two sh*ts how Francis McCaffery spends a dime and I never told anyone how to spend his money. I am, however, a fan of this basketball program and if someone does something that I think would waste a scholarship I am free to think its stupid.

Save the "don't tread on me" stuff for people who are treading on you.

Your are contradicting yourself here...unless you're suggesting Connor is a wasted scholarship.

Yes but the best of 15 players is going to be better than the best of 14 players. As far as percentages go.

Perhaps...if there are 15 players. I'm saying there will never be 15 players. Some recruits wouldn't even come to Iowa if they saw a 15 man roster IMO.
