Transfer Portal - Who Goes Shopping?

My best guess: Toren Young, Peyton Mansell, and Kaveon Merriweather.

It's a part of college football and I don't think anyone would blame them. You either work to beat someone out, wait for an injury, or you transfer. If I'm Toren...i wouldn't hang around. Ivory Kelly Martin could be another one. You now have Goodson and Sargent as the top two...tough to unseat those two.

IKM and Merriweather. Dallas Craddieth. I’m worried about DJ Johnson, and / or Julius Brents. Not really worried about Sargent or Young, one of them might, but I just don’t see it.

One wildcard that would be very disappointing is Jestin Jacobs. He didn’t play this year and in theory would still be behind Niemann next year. For a highly rated guy who wanted to play as a freshman he might move on honestly.

I could see a guy like Calvin Lockett as well. At one point Desmond Hutson was ahead if him I think, plus the 5 guys we have.

Yeah cases can be made for those 3 for sure. But doggone it if I still wish Toren Young could be given more of a role for us. Our coaches have done him a disservice. Why he hadn't been in on more short yardage/goal line situations is beyond me. I'm not saying he is Shonn Greene or anything or even bell cow material necessarily but our coaches handling of him and not having a consistent role for him is inexcusable. I've felt most of the year Goodson should have gotten the bulk of the touches with Young getting the 2nd most. Sargent to me is what IKM is. He's ok. Not great not bad just not a bell cow #1 RB and that's what the coaches thought he was day 1 this year. I never saw it and thankfully coaches made that move to Goodson albeit later then they should have.

Mansell to me is gone. If he wants to play at all he'd have to look around. Best he can hope for at Iowa is an injury to Petras. With the QB coming in behind him and Padilla already on campus it just seems unlikely Mansell will get a shot.

Merriweather got Wally Pipped. Koerner doing so well after Merriweather got hurt/nicked up hurt his chances. Didn't help that he wasn't playing the greatest right out of the gates either. He's young yet I could see him possibly sticking around another year but sure wouldn't surprise me if he hopped in the portal either.

Yeah I hope Jacobs doesn't go... I was kinda bumbed when McDonald left but then wasn't because we still had Jacobs. To me Jacobs is the most physically athletic LB on the roster. I'm glad he redshirted and got to get Doyalized some and learn. That dude from his tape just has a nack for getting to the ball carrier. And he seems tough to block with his speed and athleticism. I really really hope the coaches let him know how much he's needed and have a role for him to have.

If Stone leaves Merriweather could be in line for a starting spot.

I thought about maybe getting Jacobs on the pass rushing package next year. With his size and athleticism I think he’d be pretty good at it. Him and Evans coming off the edge, with Nixon and hopefully Golston on the inside.

But at the end of the day, right or wrong, does anyone expect a three year player Niemann to get beaten out as a senior?

Another thing to note would be Campbell and Jacobs could be a pretty intriguing linebacker pair in the next few years. Both listed at 6’4 and if they can put on the size while keeping their athleticism. That height can make zone coverage that much better (see Brian Urlacher).

Yes...it could happen. I'll be really surprised if Stone leaves though. If his measurables are off the charts maybe...you know how much stock the draft experts put in the 40 and the cone drills. Right now, I haven't heard too much buzz about him.

He could, but I believe Belton was recruited as a safety. His speed would be pretty intriguing back there. If I’m Belton I’d rather play every down at safety.

Merriweather could make a run at Cash as well. DJ Johnson won that job to start the year then played corner and didn’t return to cash. Who knows, I think we have enough talent back there, just don’t want to see too much attrition. I think the staff is pretty high on Jermari Harris at corner as well.

Stone got dinged and missed a play or two vs. Illinois; they moved Belton to his safety spot, and brought in Niemann to play the Cash/Leo. For what it is worth.

I really don't see DJ, Brents or Jacobs transferring. The only reason Brents hasn't played much is due to injury. He will absolutely start next season if he's healthy. Did Jacobs redshirt this season? I think he'll definitely see playing time next season. As far as Young I'd rather see him getting carries than Sargent.

Jacobs did redshirt this year. I thought I read somewhere that he was injured and that it limited his availability. If so, it probably sealed his fate as far as redshirting.

With Iowa I'd have no idea other than maybe Mansell if he doesn't win the starting job in the spring. I could see anyone of a number of Nebby players in the portal however. AM comes to mind.

It's hard to speculate on the players that we haven't seen play yet. If any of those transfer it will be mostly if not always that they know they aren't going to see the field. Fyi, Jacobs was hurt and thus why he didnt atleast get his 4 games.

Of the ones we know about, the running back position is the one with the most to lose. I could see IKM and Toren leave. Toren only has one year left but IKM has 2. I could see them going to a MAC school or equivalent. Sargent won't leave because he already transferred in but I could see his snaps getting more limited. Mansell obviously. Someone in the secondary maybe but let's hope not.

I agree with you whole heartily. I think he rushed the passer in HS a lot too. I like the idea of having different packages for a guy like him. Not just 3rd down passing situations either. Mix it up. Guys that can get in the backfield and disrupt things is certainly what's needed today. QBs and offenses are so good at getting rid of the ball quick now that having speed all over the place on D is huge not only for rushing passer but just pursing ball carriers. Jackobs checks those boxes to me. Time will tell.

Most of the transfers tend to hook up with coaches who recruited them out of high school.

Merriweather was very very lightly recruited out of high school. I'd be very surprised if he showed up in the portal.
