Toren Young = Fullback?

Wonder if he could put weight on and transition to fullback? Just think he deserves to be out there. More of a hope then realistic.

While I don't think it'll happen, we can't necessarily rule it out. We toyed with 2 RB sets with him in the FB spot early in the year, and I wouldn't mind seeing that come back.

I agree completely. I wrote about this earlier in the year and it would just add another competent playmaker on the field. I know it is a tough position but I think it is one he could excel at. I would very much like to see this.

Wouldn't be the craziest thing to propose by any means. He'd only have to put on about 10-15 lbs ish really. Something kinda has to give at the RB position and he at least has another option besides transferring...

Maybe. I think a more likely scenario is filling the FB role with one of our TEs. Now you are talking about someone who is likely 250 lbs, AND they represent a quality target in the pass game with a large catch radius.

Now, teaching a 6' 4" TE to find a whole and seal off a scraping LB isn't trivial, but it is taking place all over the NFL, perhaps it is time Iowa follows suit. If we can train walk-on FBs to do it, we should be able to train scholarship 3*/4* TEs to do it.

Jeremy Allen. Norm Granger. David Hudson. Michael Burger. There's a history of running FBs for the Hawkeyes. Heck, didn't Mark Weisman start as a FB?

He as always a FB stuck in a RB position. Don't forget about Sweet Leeeeeew!!

And I cannot remember BF calling any slip blocks for the fullback where they slip out to the perimeter and catch a pass, not one all year iirc. That is the kind of play you need to use in the red zone.

Does anyone remember that play being used.

And yes Toren with 10 more pounds and a chance to run and catch the ball would be good.

I have posted on this numerous times this season and they actually ran this earlier in the year and never went to it in Big 10 play. Not sure why, most likely because it makes too much sense

Ross had 1 reception for 4 yards. You're a better Hawkeye fan than me Gunga Din if you can tell me what game that was.

I would be in favor of any way to get Toren Young more playing time. I think it would be a good move. He is well respected by the players and has been voted to the leadership group since he was a freshman. Toren does not complain about his lack of touches. He needs to play and contribute on the field.

Wow. Great thought here. HOWEVER, there’s a reason almost NO OTHER SCHOOL has a FB. It’s not that all other coaches are dumb except ours. FBs don’t work. Easier to SPREAD THE FIELD with athletes, THEN RUN IT with open lanes. We prefer to jam it into 9 man fronts into the boundary with 20 ppl in the way, including the FB

That’s not true. If you go back and see where our 32 25+ pass plays came from, you’ll see many of them came from 2 back formations.

I have no recollection but 1 pass to the FB is not using that type of play to freeze the linebackers.

We made a FB a feature back. Im on board. Young and Goodson in the backfield lined up on either side of Mansell in the pistol. The run pass option out of that would be FANTASTIC.

I was more referring to RUNNING PLAYS. For sure, PASSING, from 'running' formations can work, assuming the defense is expecting run, instead of pass. Also could add extra layer of blocking for QB.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought about those plays we used week one. I thought it was kind of an interesting look and it disappeared from the playbook.

Also we had a two runningback set in the shotgun that we didn’t see much of after that.

I mentioned a couple schematic things in a thread yesterday we can look at going forward for next year. We have weapons we just need to use them. I think BF does okay with schemes, he just isn’t the greatest in game play caller yet.
