Holy Cross did a good job in the 1st quarter collapsing on Clark whenever she went into the middle of the lane -- to the point she couldn't even pass out of it and committed 4 TOs in the first four minutes. Repeating the pattern as in some recent games, Clark tries to do too much at the beginning of the game, forces things, and turns it over -- rather than sitting back, probing, testing the defense to see what they're doing. It was no coincidence that the game was tied at 11 when Clark went to the bench, and Iowa immediately opened up a 7 pt lead to 18-11. (In the 2nd quarter, kudos to Bluder for changing up the offense and having Clark start penetrating from the wing, where there aren't so many bodies to help on defense.) There's a lot of excusing of Clark's on-court whiny behavior by fans and media alike, because of her abilities. But there's a difference between being a 'steely-eyed competitor' and a competitor that gets visibly and consistently upset whenever a shot or foul call doesn't go their way. A 'steely-eyed' competitor demonstrates strength, confidence, and maturity; the other reflects immaturity and empowers your opponent.
