Tom Poholsky 1989, JVB and Hayden

Any older guys out there remember the 1989 season opener against Oregon?

Senior Tom Poholsky starts the game and bounces passes to his receivers. Hayden yanks him after completing 1-7 passes. He never throws another pass in his career.

I remember thinking, wow Hayden, that was pretty brutal and such a short leash. But being a former QB he wasn't afraid to make changes when he clearly thought a guy wasn't getting the job done. That 1989 team was not good and finished 5-6.

What it did do was give Matt Rodgers the opportunity to get a year of experience. He finished his career as a 2-time First team Big Ten QB.

Do you think Hayden would have stuck with JVB this year?

I was at that game. Bill Musgrave (Vikings OC) was the QB for Oregon.

I think Dan McGuire played too before Rodgers got it.

Tom P hurt his shoulder in Spring Practice lost his strength

JVB is terrible can throw takes sacks and has 2 delay of game penalties in 1 quarter

McGuire had left. He was upset because of the QB issues the previous year. I believe Hayden started Poholsky, McQuire and Chuck Hartlieb before settling on Hartlieb that year.

Poholsky may have thrown a few more passes that year in mop up work.

Incidentally, Rodgers was an unproven, undersized, skinny underclassman with a not very strong arm. Sound familiar?

He turned out just fine.
