Tom Davis' Last Team

Since we're all tired of discussing this year's bunch of overrated frauds, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at one of the best Iowa teams of the last 30 years, the 1998-99 Sweet Sixteen Iowa Hawkeyes.

Since message boards were in their very infant stage back then I wasn't online to discuss that great team but looking back at that team, here are some great topics that we could have covered:

- The Hawks capping a 3 game losing streak with a 20 point home loss to Wisconsin after starting 3-0 in the Big Ten
- The Hawks going 2-6 against B10 teams with winning records, including four losses by 14 points or more
- Iowa not beating a B10 team with a winning record the at any point after Jan 12th
- The Hawks choking away a game late on the road against OSU
- Poor leadership as the Hawks blew a chance for finishing all alone in 3rd with a season ending loss at Indiana then a 14 point first round loss to Wisconsin in the B10 tournament as they backed into the NCAA tournament

Of course people tend not to remember that and just remember the NCAA sweet sixteen run. What's the point of this post? That people on this board either haven't been Iowa fans that long, are not that smart or some combination of the two. The above season was one of the best Iowa seasons in the last 25 years. This year has been a good year, by any reasonable standard of Iowa basketball program success at any point over the last 30 years. Maybe it's because we've been bad for along time before the last few years, but people expecting us to win a B10 title are somewhat delusional. It's really hard to win the B10, there's a lot of really good programs and really good coaches. It's much harder to go from good to great, than it is to go from bad to good.

People need to step back from the ledge, enjoy the season and stop acting like the program is going downhill after a couple of losses. This is Fran's fourth year at Iowa, we have improved each year under Fran. Real tangible improvement that can be measured in things like wins, B10 standings, and postseason success not ISU football "momentum" type improvement. We are still headed in the right direction, we're going to be back in the NCAA tournament and have a fun team to watch. Enjoy this team because the season is going to be over very soon, we won't get to watch Marble, Basabe or McCabe in an Iowa uniform again and it's going to be a long time until next season begins.

Some nice perspective...you are right I do not remember that regular season. Only beating Arkansas and their 40 mins of hell in the Dance. Making the sw16 is an awesome thing to do, to me, short only of making the final 4.

Good post. All is not lost.

I do think that 1998-99 had a much better non-conference schedule that year, though, which went a long way in helping Iowa maintain a decent seed (5). That non-con win @KU didn't hurt matters, and I think Iowa also beat Missouri that year. That Iowa team had some big wins, and also some ugly losses. All to good teams, though. Not sure I remember that team laying an egg and losing any bad ones, but it's been 15 years so maybe my memory fails me.

To correct the OP, I think Iowa won @OSU but lost to them at home. Much like this year. That OSU team made the Final Four, along with MSU.

The current edition of Hawkeyes look very similar to many of TD's teams. The only big difference I see is that this current edition of Hawkeyes has proven they can play with the best in the conference at home or on the road. Even with the loss last night it would not shock me to see Iowa in the Final 4 and the crazier part is they would probably have some matchup advantages over their opponent because the make up of their roster.

Most of TDs teams were completely overmatched against the elite in the conference or the nation when Carver wasn't involved. The picked up some good road/neutral wins here and there, Indiana in 1991, KU in 1998, UConn in 1995, but they also took some serious beatings. Athletic teams would eat that press alive.

HawkeyeMike with the early lead for 2014 bball POY! Damn good post. Miller should put this on the front page.

There you go, Mike...as Mark Twain said, "There is nothing more irritating than a good example."

I am upset at the OP. I was about to post the very same thing. Word for word. Same punctuation even. Oh well. Thanx for saving me the effort. I'm kinda lazy anyway so I may channel some more posts thru you before the season is over.

Are you sure the OP isn't an alt of yours?

There's difference from hitting a homerun and hitting a fricking walkoff grandslam.

You sir just hit for the cycle and ended it with a walkoff! Great, great post.

Sorry for the baseball references on a basketball board...

It's sad that ppl need stuff like this as a "reminder". What's worse is you may need a new version tomorrow night cause if we lose, the trolls will triple.

It's just a game...
