To The Caller Ragging On Ed P

Jon, you used that same excuse later on as well. Call it like it is, Vandy played horribly and there is no way to sugarcoat it.

yeah Jon was trying to make excuses for vandenberg (something about the field being wet or something) like he always does... but Ed wouldn't go along with it.

<3 Ed

Excuse time is over for JVB. He needs to man up and see that Iowa is 4-2 in spite of his play. I say to JVB get it together and please join in on the fun.

This season can be very special if he can figure it out. He is without question the missing link...

Sounds like you caught all of the show. So then you absolutely heard me talking about how bad his footwork is. Said the same two weeks ago, too. You would have also heard me say that he's never played consistently at quarterback for Iowa, week to week. OR...you want me to go all spazz and say over the top stuff. Not gonna happen.

I heard your comment about footwork but missing open receivers is not footwork. If you say you are not making excuses then do not even bring up the conditions, once you do then it sounds like you are making excuses.

I believe Greg Davis is trying to have JVB do too much on reading and the time to do everything he wants him to read simply isn't there. They're in his head. If they'd back off of the complexity I think JVB would be decent

There were several instances where receivers couldn't make plays on balls because the footing gave out. JVB wasn't making great throws but in drier conditions there were plays there.

This is all moot, because clearly the coaches don't feel anyone else is close. JVB is not having a good year, nobody is saying he is. But I'm not gonna create an altar of sacrifice here.

It is so frustrating because we all know he has the ability. You think the coaches would consider pulling him for a couple of series just to send a message?

I'm definitely sure Vandy is aware that they are winning in spite of his play in many cases. I will say this, though, he does typically do a great job on his audibles and getting the offense into the right play to have success against the defense. But he still has to execute better on his throws.

Coaching could definitely be in his future if he wants it to be, IMO. He has a very good understanding of the game, just doesn't seem to react well at game speed.

This is where I think 16 has regressed the most lately. Several times today he checked to a play that ran Wiesman straight into an MSU wall. Noticed against Minnesota too.

I really haven't seen any evidence that he audibles to the right play - a couple times he has changed the run direction fine.

What I tend to see is that he audibles out of passes constantly because he has no confidence right now. I could be wrong on that, but it's what I see.

I'm also really tired of the "receivers are getting no seperation" myth. This is one of those word of mouth fallacies that people start to spew forth and suddenly it becomes fact.

I've been at a couple games. Often times he has people open and usually throw to the covered person or throws a bad ball.

1 sack in 5 games and he still can't get comfortable. It's not all his fault but much of it is.

It's just all excuses and like my grandpa said excuses are like Arseholes everyone has one.

Griese noted one of those on the ESPN broadcast, when MSU gave us man coverage with 2 receivers on the right side and Vandy audibled into some no-gain play to the left. Believe he said "you'll never see a better opportunity for a pass, and he ignored it".

I'm dumbfounded how people can continue to make excuses for JVB's play. I did for numerous games this season and had been holding out hope he'd get things ironed out over the bye week, but I don't see him coming around. I'm to the point now of just hoping he doesn't lose this team games, and certainly don't expect him to win any. If Cotton doesn't play DB on the underthrown fade, that's an easy int. The past couple games his mechanics have really regressed, particularly his footwork against MN and MSU and his unwillingness to step up into the pocket a few times today. But the most shocking thing to me is how game after game he doesn't choose to throw to his most open pass catcher. I'm dumbfounded how week after week he repeatedly makes the same mistakes. Obviously every QB makes some bad reads and misses open pass catchers, but JVB's propensity at this point is head-shaking. He also had 1:1 outside much of today and he seemed uninterested in challenging it, which was another headscratcher. Sadly, to date his play has definitely been the most disappointing.

I have no problem with Ed. I was stuck listening to the end of the game on the radio though and Dolph's play-by-play drives me crazy. One time he spent 15 seconds griping about a lack of a holding call and at no time did he say MSU's pass was incomplete. Jebus...call the game first, then gripe!

I listen to Dolph\Eddie when the Hawks are on the road. What djwoody said about calling the play and then do the background talk, is what Dolph needs to do. He is a** backwords when he calls the play by play.

You should watch a few more games. Every time he audibles it is a stretch run to the left.

I dont think Eddy said anything to harsh while broadcasting on air. He stated a few times the nonsense of a five yard pattern when we needed ten and Dolph was right there complaining too most of the times. Dolph brought up multiple times that Vandy was completely missing wide open receivers down the field while he would settle for the underneath man.

I was at the game and I can tell you the conditions were absolutely horrible; cold and very wet. It was a very tough day to throw the ball. Vandy made a great throw on the last drive to Davis, a really clutch throw.

Vandenberg's confidence appears a little low right now - he needs a big game and Greg Davis needs to let him throw down the field more. Cotton, Davis and KMM can get open - we're going to need a better passing game to beat some of the remaining teams on our schedule. The OL is blocking well for him - he just needs to relax and play. Perhaps that throw to Davis late in the game will give him a needed boost

Podolak is terrific and is analysis is first-rate

The ESPN crew was so good this week, I felt no need to play the delay game. But I always do when we have to suffer through the Beth and Joey nightmare.

The bolded is pretty funny. There are deep options on just about every play and he refuses to throw it. That's not on Davis. I actually have liked his playcalling this year even though the offensive numbers aren't very good. If Vandenberg saw half of the receivers that broke open down the field Iowa's offense would look much better.

If this is truly the case, and given the lack of play time we have no reason to doubt it, then (1) It reflects very poorly on this staff's recruiting ability, and (2) We are going to be in serious trouble next season trying to compete with a less talented and inexperienced QB.

I think it's more of a case that Ferentz prefers the known commodity rather than going with an unproven player.

It is so frustrating because we all know he has the ability according to internet message board posters who haven't watched games. You think the coaches would consider pulling him for a couple of series just to send a message?

Fixed that for you.
